Mrs. Wilke

Welcome Back! Well, between the time change, the weather and our schedule, we are trying to get back into the swing of things!

In Reading we have been working on the setting of the story. (where the story takes place) The setting of a story is not always told to us, sometimes we have to make “a best guess.” This will require us to use our prior knowledge and use the clues from the story. We have also been reviewing beginning, middle, and ending sounds. We have now switched over to lined paper during Won Way so the student's have to think about whether the letter they are going to write is a small, tall, or lazy letter. This will help them remember where the letter starts and where it sits on the line. If it is a small letter, it will start at the dotted line and sit on the “red hot” line. If it is a tall letter, it will start at the “blue line” and sit on the “red hot” line. If it is a lazy letter, it will start at the dotted line and go below the “red hot” line. When the Won Way papers come home, please continue to practice any of the letters that I have written in pen. They can practice them on the lined paper 3-5 times.

In Math we have been working on shapes and their attributes. Attributes are ways to help us describe something so when we talk about shapes we are thinking about how many corners, sides, sizes, and color they have. We have also been working on graphing, sorting and what number comes after a given number.

In Social Studies we have been learning about Dr. Seuss and doing many crafts to go along with his books. We had Read Across America last week where we stopped, dropped, and read until a bell went off- for each book they read, they got a hole punched on their punch card. Our goal was to read 25 books. Then they put their punch card into a drawing for a prize.

Next week we will start our Winter P.E. Mr. Lapham will take the student's outside snowshoeing or skiing. The Winter P.E. schedule will continue as long as we have snow. Mr. Lapham will take the Kindergartners and First Grade out starting on Monday, March 20. Please have the student's continue to bring outside clothing along with extra socks and mittens on Mondays and Wednesdays for as long as we have snow.

If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me at school. The number is 895-2915.
