For this writing, I am going to give a lot of random facts about the agricultural industry in general! My hopes are my readers will remember just one or two of these facts and share them with their friends, family, and random people!!
The average US farmer can feed 155 people
Pigs do not have sweat glands, so they lay in the mud to cool off (so the expression “sweating like a pig” is wrong!!)
Corn is grown in all 50 States
It takes the hide of 3.8 steers to make 72 footballs
In the old days, captains kept pigs on board because they believed that pigs swam toward the nearest shore (I just thought this was funny)
Pumpkins are fruits, not vegetables
It takes 10 pounds of milk to make 1 pound of cheese
Most eggs produce today will be at the store in 72 hours
Family-run operations the U.S. “accounted for 99 percent of U.S. farms and 89 percent of production” in 2015
About 11% of farmers are serving or served in the US military
Subsistence farmers are farmers who do not grow for the market, only themselves
Americans spend only 10% of their income on food, which is the lowest in the world
Figs were one of the first cultivated fruit crops
The earliest plow was called an ard
There are more than 6,000 kinds of apples
The shape of fruit trees affect the lifespan and size of their fruits
Farmers and ranchers comprise 2% of the US population
Bananas are the largest fruit crop in the world
More than 100 agricultural crops are pollinated by bees
Historically, owning a farm has been linked to status and power
Farmers need to double food production to keep up with the growing population by 2050
Farmers only receive 12 cents for every raw product sold
60% of farmers in the US are 55 years old or older
Women make today make up 30% of farmers (check out my women in agriculture writing here)
Texas has the most amount of farms in the US
