Sojeong has provided a presentation titled 'Analysis of Erosion Behavior of MICP-Treated Sand Surface by Wind-Induced Shear Velocity'. SJ did a great job on the presentation. Dr. Do, as her advisor, is proud of her seeing her development during the MS program. Keep going, Sojeong! 

Visit to U. of Ulsan

2024 Mar 28th

Surge group visited the U. of Ulsan to train a cyclic direct simple shear tester. Prof. Jongmuk Won, a geotechnical professor at the U. of Ulsan, and his students welcomed us. During the training, we were glad to learn how to use the instrument and enjoyed the time. Thank the U. of Ulsan for the warmhearted hospitality!

New position

2024 Jan.

Dr. Do has been designated as a vice dean for the College of Marine Science at GNU. With the new dean, Dr. Jung-Suck Lee at the Department of Seafood Science and Technology in the same college, Dr. Do will serve the college and local community for the next two years. Hope to have many new experiences!

In and Out

Hyeongjoon has a job at Dasan engineering consultant, so he's decided to leave the lab! Congratulations! SURGE wishes HY's happy new life at Seoul. At the meantime, Dr. Turab Jafri has joined the lab. He will be working on biocementation and much other research.  Dr. Jafri's google scholar is here. Welcome so much!

KGSS Fall Conference at Sunchon

Dr. Do attended the 2023 KGSS conference at Sunchon (Sunchon National University) and provided a presentation related to Geocell.

KSCE Convention at Yeosoo

2023 Oct. 18th - 20th

2023 KSCE Convention had held at Yeosoo and Dr. Do and Hyeongjoon attended. Dr. Do was a organizing committee and HJ presented his work by a poster session (Effect of Geocell Height on Bearing Capacity in Sand). Dr. Do also conducted a session chair for Soil Improvement session. In this session, Taeyoung presented our ongoing work regarding the devegetation effect by MICP. The event was awesome and unforgettable. We hope there will be unlimited changes to participate in future KSCE events!

Study at different place

2023 Sep. - 2024 Mar.

Sojeong is staying in Japan for her exchange student program. She is in the Environmental Study Program at the Department of Geography, Komazawa University. SJ is struggling with Japanese and English away from Korean! Good luck!

Lab crowded with high schoolers

2023 Sep. - Nov.

Surge Lab has engaged with a neighboring high school, Dongwon High School, for Physics class. Periodically high school students visit our lab to perform simple Physics tests, especially related to Geotech. Students in the photos are making construction materials mixed with waste marine debris.  We hope those students have interests in University-level knowledge and Engineering!

KSCE BUK branch Convention

GNU OCE students attended KSCE Busan-Ulsan-Kyeongnam branch Convention under the direction of Dr. Do. Students organized a part of the convention themselves and enjoyed the event a lot. Great works!

Editorial board meeting for International Journal of Geo-Engineering

Dr. Do was appointed an associate editor for the International Journal of Geo-Engineering (IJGE) 2023-2025. IJGE is an international journal operated by Korea Geotechnical Society. Members is doing their best to improve the journal quality. 

5th US-Korea Geotechnical Workshop

Dr. Do disseminated his recent work, Devegetation Technology using Bio-Cementation, at 5th US-Korea Geotechnical Workshop (online). The workshop included 6 presenters from Korea and 6 presenters from US.

The last day of class and Lab summer trip

2023 Mid June

Lab members celebrated the last day of class. Also, members had a good time in Busan on a lab summer trip. The event included a farewell for Hyeok. Thank you so far, Mr. HC!

Dr. Do attended 2022 ICRE held at Jeju providing a presentation (Microbial Attempt to Improve Unpaved Road in Developing Countries as Low Cost and Easy Implementation). The presentation was awarded as the best oral presentation.

Sojeong and Dr. Do attended 2022 ICGE held at Seoul National  University. Sojeong provided 'Effect of Urea Hydrolysis by Ureolytic Bacteria under Different Solvent Conditions' among knowledgable scholars. Good job, SJ!

2022 March to June

A field-scale project is ongoing to investigation the devegetation effect of MICP funded by Korea Expressway Corporation at Goseong. Dr. Do discussed the work with field engineers. Expected to see a great result.

Dr. Do provided a presentation regarding a recent project (Optimization of Lightweight Soil Reinforced with Waste Fishing Net and its Design Guideline) and did a chair for Session 2. The presentation was awarded as the best oral presentation.

Career seminar on KGS conference

Dr. Do attended 2022 KGS Spring conference at Seoul, and provided a presentation 'how to prepare academic career' in YGE special session, chaired by Professor Ilhan Chang. This consisted of 3 presentations: Research institute, industry, and academia. Dr. Do was in charge of academia. Attendants definitely felt something different compared to conventional-geotechnical presentations so far. YGE group hopes such events never stop.

A new research project initiated

A new research project 'Unpaved road improvement by microbes and enzyme' has been launched for the next 5 months. The project is funded by KICT. Hyeongjoon is involved in this project.

Won 3rd place in LH competition!

2021 Nov 25th

Sojeong won 3rd place in the 12th LH national land development competition OUT OF 75 TEAMS! The idea was 'the use of microbes to mitigate fugitive dust.' All winners were a team, but she was the only person who won the competition alone. Proud of you, Sojeong! Congratulations!

A new research project 'Devegetation near road by bio-cementation' has been launched for the next 6 months as a local project. The project is funded by Gyeongsangnamdo and Ministry of Education. Jihye and Geunhyung are involved in this project.

Dr. Do and Sojeong attended 2021 KSCE Convention at Gwangju, South Korea. Dr. Do did chairman for geotechnical session 1, and Sojeong made a presentation regarding the MICP surface treatment for unpaved road during geotechnical session 3.

Workshop participation

Dr. Do made a presentation during 3rd US-Korea Geotech Workshop hosted by the Korean Geotechnical Society - North America (KGS-NA). The presentation title was 'Application and Extension of MICP.' Participants were mainly young geotechnical engineers (YGE) board members led by Dr. Ilhan Chang of KGS. My pleasure to be a part of this workshop.

Research dissemination

Dr. Do had a research seminar to E3GEO research group at Ajou University under Dr. Ilhan Chang's direction. Dr. Do showed his past research on MICP, especially erodibility perspective. Deep appreciation for the invitation from Dr. Chang.
