The Family and Consumer Sciences Department of NC Cooperative Extension in Currituck County works closely with community members to educate them on increasing their quality of life. Whether it is through learning to prepare delicious, healthy meals through our hands-on cooking class or understanding their Medicare options and save money through one-on-one counseling. We have a large variety of options in terms of volunteer opportunities. Read the descriptions or watch the videos to see if something sparks your interest.

Extension Master Food Volunteers

The Extension Master Food Volunteer program provides formal training to volunteers in the areas of cooking, nutrition, food safety, and local food. Volunteers are trained by Cooperative Extension Family and Consumer Science agents so that they can support community-based programs. Examples of Cooperative Extension programs include nutrition education classes for youth, adults, and seniors; cooking demonstrations at farmers’ markets, food pantries, schools, childcare centers, and other community sites; educational booths at health fairs; food preservation classes; and more!

Volunteers receive rigorous training to ensure that they are prepared to assist with these programs, and so they can answer community members’ food and health-related questions. The Extension Master Food Volunteer program consists of thirty hours of training in the core curriculum, which covers all of the basics in family and consumer sciences. Volunteers are then required to shadow their supervising agent for 30 hours, and complete 20 hours of service and 10 hours of continuing education a year.

Trainings are offered regionally and yearly. Stay tuned for more information about upcoming trainings.
