ASSIGNMENTS:
1. Three Technical Projects on Selected Cultural Theme
My interest from the application through the experience was in exploring Argentinian children's books and the book culture of Buenos Aires. I teach elementary level students who are learning English. Many of my students' home language is Spanish. I am interested in the stories of Latin America that I can share with them. Surprise I brought back a bunch back to the US with a little help.
Buenos Aires has a reputaton for being a book city. I had read accounts of their book culture and collected bookstores, libraries, and book places to visit during my stay. I found Alberto Manuel's account, "A child's reading in Buenos Aires" and discovered that he, like Jorge Luis Borges before him, was a librarian who had made a major impact.
Project 1: Children's Books in Buenos Aires
A map of libraries, schools and bookstores and other spots where I found children's books in Buenos Aires.
Follow the links to the pages at the top to explore some of my research and experiences.
During my stay I discovered a project to support reading and attended a talk at the National. Library. The talk complete with student questions is now available online.
The video to the left is a copy of a title written by Comino that is provided to children and families and made available elecronically. I discovered the event was one of a months long program.
As I dug into the author I found a PDF of a story about the Maldives and a video.
2. Two Visual Thinking Reflections
I found this bit of text on Museo Moderno website "The Museo Moderno is committed to a pedagogy of wonder, where learning goes hand in hand with experimentation and play, and to developing an experience grounded in the enjoyment, surprise, curiosity or pain awakened by the works of great Argentinian artists." I found the exhibition and the individual pieces to be dynamic explorations of "learning." I responded to the many "webs" included to connect the individual artifacts. The piece is a part of a current exhibition Endless Learning. The choice of almost a school "web" assignment for the composition of the work made it easy to connect with this piece. The inclusion of textual elements in addition to the color and line also connected the piece with the idea of learning and endless possiblities. The inclusion of quesitons and "links" between the elements led me to make connections and consider the elements of art, construction, education, practice, theory in my own work. I appreciated the choice of green circles as an invitation to "growth" rather than a fixed mindset.
Tres Figuras en Marcha, 1943
Three Walking Figures
Hector Poleo
Caracas, Venezuela
from the Museum of Latin America
I responded to this image thinking of the students I have met who have recently fled Venezuela and the difficult journeys they have made to the United States. At MALBO I noticed the number of Latin American countries were not included in selections from their collection on view.
I was struck by the composition of the painting. The three figures are in profile, all focused on a point out of frame. Further, the three figures are evenly spaced and appear in the same "field." In terms of perspective one figure is not smaller or larger than the others. The colors the artist chose match closely to the landscape with the most saturated color used for the ground.
3. One Film or Book Review
Furia is the story of a girl in Rosario who wants to play futbol. The book tells the story of a girl who is talented and driven to play soccer, professionaly. A dream only available to boys in her community. She is "furia" on the field and determined to do whatever it takes to play. Her brother and a boy from the community who made it to play professional soccer offer a glimpse of how different the opportunities are for girls than boys. Yes, there is also a lovely romance too.
I was particularly interested in this book, a recommendation from a fellow traveler, after I went to see the national Argentinian women's team play.
