Current curriculum updates:
Math: Unit 7 - Multiplication and Division 3: This is the third unit in Grade 4 that develops students’ understanding of multiplication and division. Building upon the foundation from previous units, students learn to multiply 2-digit by 2-digit and 1-digit by up to 4-digits using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Students continue making connections between the inverse relationship between multiplication and division in real-world contexts and learn to use estimation as a valuable tool for assessing reasonableness of answers. Additionally, students encounter division situations with up to 4-digit dividends and 1-digit divisors. They will continue to interpret and make sense of remainders in context. The strategies solidified in this unit prepare students for the standard division algorithm for multiplication, which is introduced in Grade 5.

Social Studies: Exploration Past and Present - Exploration is not something that only happened in the past. In this unit, fourth graders investigate what motivated and continues to motivate people to travel to unfamiliar places to inquire and learn. Using our essential questions as well as their own, students learn about explorers from three different time periods and compare their motivations and contributions. Included in their study are examples of explorers from three time periods. These include Ibn Battuta, Marco Polo and Leif Erikson from the Medieval time period. Explorers such as Prince Henry, da Gama, Magellan, Columbus, La Salle, and Cartier from the Renaissance are also included. Finally, our fourth graders investigate more contemporary explorers and exploration today, considering what exploration means to us today. In all eras students consider the role of technology in exploration.
