North Carolina Pipeline Watch

The Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP) proposes to run a fracked gas pipeline 200 miles in North Carolina through communities and across waterways. Should construction begin, we want to ensure ACP fully complies with regulations intended to protect people and the environment from pollution by engaging volunteer observers. This program is organized by a group of conservation and community organizations.

This website is intended to provide resources to volunteers trained to perform in the field monitoring of construction activities, a monitoring guide, field data sheet, maps, and pictures of pollution control measures.

Let us know if you'd like to organize a training in your community or to become a volunteer monitor.

The Atlantic Coast Pipeline has not yet received all required approvals. Advocates continue to oppose its construction at both the Federal (e.g., Federal Energy Regulatory Commission or FERC) and the State (NC Department of Environmental Quality or DEQ) levels as do our colleagues in both West Virginia and Virginia.

However, because there is some on the ground activity and because we aim to be proactive rather than reactive, we are launching this monitoring program in NC to not only raise awareness of the potential environmental impacts but also to identify and report on issues that might otherwise go unnoticed. Similar efforts are underway in WV and VA. Together we are working to stop the ACP.

8/1/2018: Clean Air and Water Advocates Launch Pipeline Monitoring Effort

RALEIGH, NC -- Today, a group of clean air and water advocates announced they would monitor construction of the fracked gas Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP) for violations of commonsense environmental protections required by state and federal permits. Trained volunteers and staff with the Sierra Club, Sound Rivers, Winyah Rivers and Cape Fear River Watch will monitor ACP construction activities by water, land, and air to ensure potential violations are reported to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The initiative will be known as the North Carolina Pipeline Watch (NCPW).
