The Department of Post Graduate Studies in Physics was established in the year 2012 by Prof. H. Pundareeka Bhatta. In the year 2018, the department of post-graduate studies in physics was conferred with "Research Centre Status" recognized by Bangalore University. The Department of Post Graduate Studies & Research in Physics team consists of a very young, talented band of teaching staff highly motivated to train the students of M.Sc (Physics). The department is currently headed by Dr R. Raja Ramakrishna
The physics department has very well-equipped laboratories with advanced research activities in Nuclear Physics and Material Science. This is a conducive environment for aspirants who want to establish their career in physics, and pure sciences. A large number of seminars, special lectures by eminent scientists, workshops, and conferences are conducted by the department. M.Sc. Students are encouraged to participate in conferences and present contributory research papers which is a unique feature of this department and is rarely found elsewhere.
The physics department aspires to be one of the distinguished centre for excellence in physics learning and research. Department has Research Collaboration with Various Institutes such as IISc, JNCASR, R.V.C.E, Bangalore University, Nakhon Pathom Rajabhat University, Thailand.
The department of post graduate studies and research in physics takes initiatives for overall development of students by providing them practical orientation, research activities to inculcate employability, research & development skills which will help them to face this competitive world. The department activities conducted are focused on imparting scientific knowledge along with research-oriented applications. Simultaneously personality development of students is also given priority.
Competitive Skill Development:
Quiz: A departmental quiz will be held by teachers with in the department to understand the knowledge of student and his/her interest pertaining to subject.
Group Discussion: Group discussion will be held every week in their 2nd year as a part of their project work in which the Dynamic learning by questioning skills will be carried out to impart their active participation and able to think out of the box capabilities.
Presentation/ Seminars: Each student from the beginning of their classes in the department should present the topics provided to them by the respective teachers so as to improve their communication skills and teaching ability.
Surprise and Open Book Test: In due course of time teachers will carry surprise test or open book test so as to make students active participants throughout their course.
Technical Skill Development:
Practical Experience: Students need to build or develop new experiment as a part of their curricular activity in their advanced laboratory course.
IOT: Internet of Things (IOT) based experiments is been initiated to understand physics in simple ways.
Research Activities: At the end of their 3rd and 4th Sem; each student needs to submit their thesis work which is a part of their curricular activity.
Field Work: Students need to travel to national institutes/ industries / prominent R & D centers in and around Karnataka to use the research facilities available for their research work and get experienced to operate the instruments or gain the knowledge of applied physics.
Add-on courses: An Add-On course is initiated on “Glass science and Technology” to impart science activities for non-science students such as MCom/MSc Maths.
Placement Initiatives:
Out-Campus Placement: Teachers who have contacts with other colleges or institutes will help students to get placed in other institutes/colleges.
Promoting for Higher studies: Research placements bulletin or PhD admission details will be provided to students regularly by contacting through mail or message for those who are creative/talented/aspirants.
