As a two-sport athlete who loves to compete, I can be found on the soccer or lacrosse fields or sitting in the corner of the writing center drinking coffee. Although sports have always been my first love, I have recently discovered the enjoyment writing can bring. Starting my high school career as a “writing hater” I found myself in AP Language and Composition sitting across from, now, my favorite teacher, Dr. Bell. As the year progressed, I wrote numerous essays, with minimal success. It was June when I started the first draft of my college essay, after the first consultation with Dr. Bell, he questioned every single decision. At that moment, everything seemed to click, all of the essay’s I hated writing as a freshman disappeared, all of the poems I read and didn’t understand finally made sense, and the arguments that I wrote junior year instantly became, stronger and more effective. Looking back, I believe questioning your decisions when it comes to writing is the first step in becoming a stronger writer. If you come to the Writing Center I hope you walk away with a better understanding of yourself and your writing process.
