Introduction and Expectations

My name is Jessica Price, and I'm beginning my 19th year as a reading specialist at Mooers Elementary. I'm an avid runner, hiker, backpacker, and skier. I love to integrate these topics in reading material for my students when I can!

You can reach me by e-mail or phone. I am also connected on Parent Square if your child is currently one of my students.

In the morning, I will be working with Mrs. Deuso's kindergarten class, Mrs. Stitt's first grade class, and Mrs. Blackburn's second grade class during guided reading. We'll be working on the same skills and strategies listed below. I will also see first graders for RTI (tier 3) instruction.  In the afternoon, I will be teaching 3rd and 4th grade AIS.

RTI (tier 3) and AIS are 40 minute blocks of time where your child will receive specialized reading instruction in order to help him/her overcome their struggles in reading and writing. It is essential that this supplemental instruction is supported and extended at home. I will be assigning homework for your child from time to time. If there is not a specific assignment, I strongly encourage you to spend time reading and reviewing with your child every night. Below are some decoding and comprehension strategies that you can encourage when reading with your child.

Decoding Strategies

Decoding is figuring out how to say a word that you don't know. When your child comes across a word they don't know, encourage them to try these strategies rather than just telling them the word.

Stretch It

Blend It

Check It

Break It

Comprehension Strategies

Comprehension is the ability to understand what has been read. Comprehension comes from discussion, so your child needs you to model how to think about what you read. Then, talk with them about what they're reading. Use the following words and phrases to help! Sometimes even the best SOUNDING readers struggle to actually UNDERSTAND and express what they've read. Practicing these strategies regularly at home and at school is crucial.

Fluency

Fluency is the ability to read smoothly (not quickly) with expression, without sounding choppy or reading word by word. This helps convey the author's message and the characters' feelings. One way to improve fluency is to reread familiar books. Encourage your child to use different voices for different characters and change their voice to match the mood of the character.
