English as a Second Language

The English as a Second Language program provides non-English speaking students with the opportunity to obtain the communication skills needed to develop proficiency in each area of language arts. Additionally, academic support is offered to students to assist in their acclimation to their mainstream subjects. A district approved standardized test is administered upon entry and twice yearly to monitor each student’s individual progress.

ESL COMMON CORE SUPPORT I-II 0905 (Not Running)

This course will focus on further development of the necessary skills to succeed in CP English I-II or ESL Advanced. Emphasis will be on the study of literature, vocabulary development, and the writing process. In addition, students will continue to focus on the areas of listening, speaking, and viewing as they relate to the course content.

CO-REQUISITE: ESL Advanced OR College Prep English I-II.

This course will provide intensive instruction and additional time for students individually to develop English skills in listening, speaking, viewing, reading, and writing. Emphasis will also be directed to individual student needs. Students will be guided to develop study skills for all of their classes.

ESL INTERMEDIATE (single period) 0975

This course is taken concurrently with either ESL CCS III or ESL CCS IV. The format of this course is similar to the ESL Beginner course, but at a higher ability level. Students will have opportunities to further develop their listening, speaking, viewing, reading, and writing skills based on a variety of topics. Authentic literature, including poetry, short stories, and plays will be read to increase fluency and reading comprehension. The emphasis on writing will be further developed to include the basic essay format. Additionally, there will be a continued focus on study skills.

This course is for students whose communication skills have improved considerably, but who have not exited the ESL program. Emphasis will be placed upon the students’ needs in listening, speaking, viewing, reading and writing to bring them to a level of communication to exit the ESL program. Students must be able to demonstrate advanced reading and writing proficiency in this course.

This course is a small group class designed to improve reading, writing, listening and speaking to a standard American English level in support of ESL transition into mainstream English courses. It is also a study course that focuses on student connection to the use of available study resources and student involvement in school services that enhance personal learning practices.

Bilingual ELA 0972

This course is designed to teach English reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills with corresponding grammatical concepts. Instruction provides sequential language development to enable students to be successful in their daily lives and to transition into the general program of instruction. Also, it improves narrative, expository and persuasive writing; teaches speech, listening, vocabulary and the basics of research. Reading selections come from a mixture of historical periods and ethnicity and presented by genre or theme: short stories, plays, poems, novels, and nonfiction.
