Summer Reading Information Grades K to 8

Summer Reading will run all Summer and minutes can recorded HOME BASE is a fun, safe, and completely free online destination where kids can create their own avatar, interact with their favorite Scholastic characters, play games, and read books.

Until September 4th kids will be able to visit a special Read-a-Palooza zone where they can start or keep their reading streaks, earn special rewards, and more. Home Base is moderated 24/7.

Home Base is available via the web online, and as an app for both Apple and Android devices.

Congratulations, your school now has Scholastic Literacy, a blended solution that ensures all your K–8 students enjoy purposeful independent reading every day with over 2,300 ebooks and thousands of Think More quizzes to increase comprehension. Spanish titles are also included.

*Remember, students need to read independently for at least 20 minutes each day to boost their reading proficiency.

Summer Reading Book Club Rising 8th to 12th Grade Students

Would you like to share your voice and insights regarding the current issues in our world and in our nation? Would you like to learn the historical connections to the current events? You can be part of a unique and exciting opportunity to be part of the inaugural “Humanities Summer Book Club” The club is open for students that will be entering grades 8 - 12 in September 2020. We are pleased to announce that the book of choice is the highly anticipated new release by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi, Stamped: Racism, Anti Racism, and You. The attached link provides a wonderful interview by the authors discussing the book that will provide you with some background. The club admission is based on a first come first served basis.

The club will meet once a week to discuss select chapters and to engage in activities that relate to the reading. Recent events have challenged us as a nation to not only have courageous conversations about societal ills, but also to take action on matters that relate to Social Justice. The book club is an inviting, safe, and respectful platform to engage in this process. The meeting dates will begin during the week of July 6, 2020. The book club will take place over a five week time period.

Learning Ally Information

To support summer reading in grades 9-12, students can access audiobooks through Learning Ally. We have recently acquired Learning Ally through a grant funded by the state, to create equitable access to students in need of audiobooks and additional reading resources. Learning Ally allows teachers and students to download audiobooks from a collection of over 10,000 books ranging from grade levels K to 12. Teachers can assign books to students that are needed for instruction and personalize the student’s collection with books on their reading level. Students can also download books of their choice and find a variety of genres with new publications. Learning Ally is available for all New Brunswick students regardless of whether or not they have an IEP or 504 plan.
