MOʻOLELO NO KA LAU - STORY ABOUT THE DESIGN AND SCHOOL WIDE THEME
Huakaʻi wiwo ʻole aku ʻo Māui e ʻalehe aku i ka lā e hoʻomālie, a hōʻea aku i kahi o kona kupuna wahine. He malihini ʻo Māui i kona kupuna, ʻaʻole i launa mua. ʻAʻohe mahuʻi iki o ka luahine, ʻo kāna moʻopuna nō kai hiki mai. Puana aʻe kāna nīnau i ka malihini ʻōʻili mai, “Na wai ke kupu, ʻo ʻoe?” Pane haʻaheo aku ke kama, “Nāu nō!” “Naʻu me wai?” Pane hou aku, “Nāu nō, na Hina!” ʻAkahi nō a ʻike ke kupuna wahine, ʻaʻole kā kēia he malihini! He ʻohana! ʻO ke keiki a kāna kaikamahine ʻo Hina. Kōkua nui mai ke kupuna wahine i nā ʻaha nui a me nā ʻōkuhi a pau e hei aku ai i ka lā a maloʻo pono nā kuʻina kapa a Hina. As Māui boldly set out to ensnare the sun in order to slow down its trek across the sky, he arrived before his grandmother. Māui was a stranger to her; they had never met before, and so his grandmother had no reason to think that her grandson was this boy who had arrived. She asked this stranger, “Who is this of spring, who do you belong to?” The boy proudly responded, “I belong to you!” “How are you related to me?” He again answered, “I am your family through Hina!” His grandmother finally realized that this was no stranger! This boy is family! He is the child of her daughter, Hina. The old woman then provided Māui with the ropes and the instructions he needed in order to catch the sun so that Hina’s kapa cloth could properly dry.
He kama ʻo Māui na Hina a me ona mau kūpuna a pau ma mua aku. Ma ia manaʻo like, he mau mamo kākou na ke aukahi hoʻōla ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, a me nā kūpuna a pau i kōkua mua mai i ka hoʻokumu ʻana. I ko kākou puka ʻana i ke ao ākea, e hele wiwo ʻole aku kākou, no ka mea, he mana nui ko kākou moʻokūʻauhau. ʻO ka paʻa ʻana o ko kākou pilina i ka moʻokūʻauhau ka mea e hoʻonoa ʻia ai nā pōmaikaʻi lehulehu o Hawaiʻi, a loaʻa maʻalahi iā kākou. E lawe haʻaheo kākou i nā haʻawina maikaʻi a pau o ko kākou moʻokūʻauhau, a ke nīnau ʻia mai kākou e ka poʻe ʻakahi nō a launa aku, “Na wai ʻoe?”, e pane aku kākou, “Na ko Nāwahī!” Māui was a descendant of Hina and all of his kūpuna before him. In that same way, we are all descendants of the Hawaiian language revitalization and all of the kūpuna who of ered their assistance in its establishment. When we set out into the world, we must also move boldly, because we come from a powerful lineage. The firm understanding of these relationships within our lineage is what will open the doors to Hawaiʻi’s abundant prosperity, making them readily available to us. We must proudly take up these valuable gifts found within our lineage, so when we are asked, “Who do you belong to?” we can confidently respond, “I belong to Nāwahī!”
