In addition to the courses required to obtain a High School Diploma, the courses listed below are recommended for pursuing a career in Science, Biology, or Medicine.
Additional & Advanced Programs (For 11th & 12th Graders):
Clara Maass Internship
Physical Therapy Internship
Athletic Trainer Internship
Anatomy & Physiology
College Credit Available
Prerequisite(s): Biology
Anatomy and physiology is a course that will enable students to develop an understanding of the relationship between the structures and functions of the human body. Students will also learn the mechanisms for maintaining homeostasis within the human body. This course will include a review of introductory biology, cytology, histology, detailed integumentary system, detailed skeletal system, detailed muscular system, and a brief overview of the remaining systems. This course will involve laboratory activities, projects, dissections, textbook material, diagrams, journal writings, and clinical studies.
Forensic Science
Prerequisite(s): None
The purpose of the Forensic Science program is to provide highly motivated students with the opportunity to pursue education in the forensic sciences. This program will produce cutting-edge activities and students will directly benefit forensic science and law enforcement. The proposed program will build upon the knowledge from previous science classes and provide the opportunity to meet with law enforcement and security agencies in North Arlington. Forensic science is rapidly developing and evolving into a more rigorous and sophisticated field of scientific endeavor. The demand for better-educated and trained scientists is increasing rapidly. Students in forensic science will be in greater demand in the future as leaders and managers and the proposed program will respond to that need.
AP Biology
College Credit Available
Prerequisite(s): Biology & Teacher Recommendation
This course is designed to enable the students to develop advanced inquiry and reasoning skills, such as designing a plan for collecting data, analyzing data, applying mathematical routines, and connecting concepts in and across domains. The result will be readiness for the study of advanced topics in subsequent college courses. The contents that define the AP Biology course and exam are organized into four big ideas: Big Idea 1: Evolution: The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life. Big Idea 2: Cellular Processes: Biological systems utilize free energy and molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce, and to maintain dynamic homeostasis. Big Idea 3: Genetics and Information Transfer: Living systems store, retrieve, transmit, and respond to information essential to life processes. Big Idea 4: Interactions: Biological systems interact, and these systems and their interactions possess complex properties
AP Environmental Science
College Credit Available
Prerequisite(s): Teacher Recommendation
This is an interdisciplinary course that focuses on ecological processes, human impacts on the earth, and how to resolve or prevent natural and human-made environmental problems. Students who complete AP Environmental Science are expected to be able to apply scientific concepts, principles, and methodologies to real-world examples and problems.
Exploring Space Science
Prerequisite(s): Physics
This course introduces students to astronomy and the space program. We utilize many online resources as we investigate: (i) the broad history of the cosmos through the Big History Project (https://school.bighistoryproject.com/bhplive); (ii) the origin and behavior of the solar system (https://nj.pbslearningmedia.org/); and (iii) observational astronomy using the University of Nebraska astronomy simulators (https://astro.unl.edu/).
We also construct and launch several model rockets throughout the year, which require various levels of skill to complete. Example kits (all from the manufacture Estes) in increasing order of difficulty include the generic E2X kit, the Wizard Kit, the Estes Bull Pup ( a scale model of an US Air Force ICBM), and a model of the German V2 rocket from World War II.
AP Chemistry
College Credit Available
Prerequisite(s): Chemistry
This course provides students with a college-level foundation to support future advanced coursework in chemistry. Students cultivate their understanding of chemistry through inquiry-based investigations, as they explore content such as: atomic structure, intermolecular forces and bonding, chemical reactions, kinetics, thermodynamics, and equilibrium.
Exploring the Animal World
Prerequisite(s): None
Animals have evolved over time which has led to animal diversity. Scientists group animals based on shared characteristics. Humans and animal populations impact each other. Dissection and lab safety are essential to the study of Zoology. All students will understand that life science principles are powerful conceptual tools for making sense of the complexity, diversity, and interconnectedness of life on Earth. Order in natural systems arises in accordance with rules that govern the physical world, and the order of natural systems can be modeled and predicted through the use of mathematics.
AP Statistics
College Credit Available
Prerequisite(s): Algebra 2-H, English 2-H, Teacher Recommendation
AP Stats introduces students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. There are four themes evident in the content, skills, and assessment in the AP Stats course:
Exploring data
Sampling and experimentation
Probability and simulation
Statistical inference
Intro to Statistics
Prerequisite(s): Algebra 2, English 2
Intro to Statistics is an introductory course in descriptive statistics and statistical inference including the study of probability. Topics of study include summary statistics, graphical displays of data, sampling, probability distributions, confidence intervals and significance testing. Practical problems involving correlation, linear regression, surveys, experiments and hypothesis testing are also included. There will be an emphasis on developing a critical perspective of data and statistical analyses as they are presented in popular culture. Problem-solving and reasoning abilities will be enhanced. Graphing calculator, written and oral communication and collaboration skills will be employed in solving real-life problems.
AP Psychology
College Credit Available
Prerequisite(s): Honors or AP experience
