Chapter 18 Key Concepts:

1. Few scientific questions have been answered sufficiently well enough so that no controversy exists. One must evaluate the evidence and make decisions using the preponderance of evidence.

2. Weather and climate are chaos-driven phenomenon. It is difficult to predict the impact of various changes in the factors affecting climate when small differences in initial conditions can result in large differences in conditions later in time. Additionally, we don’t know all the factors that influence climate and we don’t know how each of the factors influences the other factors.

3. Gases in the troposphere act to keep heat from leaving the planet. Theory predicts that if the quantity of these gases in the atmosphere increases, the quantity of heat leaving the planet will decline. If global warming occurs, then both regional climatic changes and a rise in sea level are expected.

4. The scientific consensus is that the increase in temperatures observed over the last 50 years is part of a global warming trend.
