Methods of Technology Integration: AI in English Language Learning
Abstract: The paper explores the integration of OpenAI's ChatGPT in education, with a focus on its impact on English Language Learners (ELLs). Tracing the history of educational technology skepticism, the study examines ChatGPT's versatile applications amid initial controversy. Through a comprehensive literature review, it discusses opportunities and challenges in AI-driven language education. The paper advocates a balanced approach, offering recommendations for effective integration, particularly in ESL (English as a Second Language), ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) settings. An example course illustrates ChatGPT's role in a heutagogical framework. The integration methods cover phases like brainstorming, drafting, feedback, and language enhancement. Aligned with literature, the paper emphasizes a human-centric perspective, transparency, and ongoing evaluation, providing a roadmap for symbiotic human-AI relationships to enhance language learning for ELLs.
