Title of Work: Performing Design Work and Engineering Analysis Utilizing CivilFEM Software
Abstract:
Civil engineers continue to shape the modern world, continuously developing and enhacing society’s buildings, bridges, transportation networks, and other necessary utilities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the public. Technology intertwines with these engineering advancements as software is crucial to create efficient, accurate models for construction. This report details my experience working with Ingeciber: a civil engineering consultancy in Madrid. Their main objective is to specialize their computer-aided engineering software, CivilFEM, and market their CAE technology to the Spanish and global market. My primary task was to learn, develop, and enhance my skills with the software by building the structural elements that make up civil infrastructures such as beams, trusses, slabs, and frames. Additionally, this report will compare and contrast my language acquisition and acculturation both working in Madrid and studying in university at Alicante. Utilizing these observations, I will examine how residing in different parts of Spain affected my intercultural sensitivity that reflect on my overall intercultural competence within these regions.
Title of Work (IGP Language): Realización de trabajos de diseño y análisis de ingeniería utilizando el software CivilFEM
Abstract (IGP Language):
Elevator Pitch Transcript:
Hello! My name is Tiffany McCremens and the title of my project is “Performing Design Work and Engineering Analysis Utilizing CivilFEM Software.” I am currently a 5th year IGP student double majoring in civil engineering and modern languages with a Spanish emphasis. I spent my time abroad in Spain as an exchange student in the University of Alicante and completed an internship in Madrid. In Alicante, I took courses relating to civil engineering, and the concepts I learned in my university courses were utilized throughout my fieldwork experience.
I worked as an intern for Ingeciber: a civil engineering consultancy based in Madrid. My main objective as an Ingeciber intern was to utilize their in-house, computer-aided engineering software, CivilFEM. If you are unfamiliar with computer-aided drawings, or CAD for short, the software renders 2D and 3D designs that allow engineers to better visualize, develop, modify, and optimize infrastructure designs before construction. Throughout my internship, I learned and developed my skills with this software to design common civil engineering structural elements such as beams, trusses, slabs, and frames-which hold the buildings, bridges, dams, and transportation networks that we see today. I worked with a small team of 4-5 civil and engineers to develop my skills with the software as well as my practical knowledge as an engineer. Additionally, I edited presentation slides of CivilFEM modules that would be used for their online international masters course. Outside of engineering work, I also collaborated with their marketing division to assist with translating their advertisements, flyers, notifications, and other documents from Spanish to English.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, my colleagues and I conducted our work virtually. Since my work was all online, the flexibility of not going to the office allowed me to work remotely within different parts of Madrid and explore other cities around Spain. Though I did not fathom of venturing my study abroad experience during a global pandemic, I took the opportunity to challenge myself, and I came out of it confident in my abilities to exceed as an engineer in my future career.
