Title of Work: Confident Cooperation: Data Sovereignty and Germany
Abstract:
This research focuses on idea of data sovereignty in Germany and will investigate why Germany is a leader in data sovereignty infrastructure. Data sovereignty is becoming ever more important in an economy in which more data is being collected than ever before and is developing more ways to leverage and interpret that data. I am doing my internship at sovity, a company that is facilitating the transparent and open sharing of data, so that more parties can safely take part in the data economy. Each party will have sovereign control over its own data, in that it can decide how and with whom its data can be shared. This research was completed with the resources of Northern Arizona University, Technical University of Dortmund, and sovity’s own knowledge base. It mainly answers the question: what connection is there between the German sense of privacy and the development of the Data Sovereignty framework?
Title of Work (IGP Language): Vertrauensvolle Kooperation: Daten Souveränität und Deutschland
Abstract (IGP Language):
Elevator Pitch Transcript:
Hello everyone! My name is Jared Weinberger and I am studying Computer Science as part of the German cohort.
I am studying in the Ruhrgebiet at the Technische Universität Dortmund. I chose Dortmund because I wanted to experience life in a large city and I believed that TU Dortmund's technical focus would be useful in growing my skills as a Software Engineer and in finding an internship.
I am interning at a startup just north of the university called sovity, a spinoff from the Fraunhofer Research Institute. sovity helps companies integrate into a system of techinically ensured open and secure data exchange. This inspired my research, which focuses on the powerful German privacy consiousness the German's relationship to data sovereignty.
My work consists of software development of sovity's customer and administrative portals, where customers and sovity employees can manage the complex infrastructure pieces that make sovereign data exchange possible. As part of a team I am helping to ensure that the architecture of this portal is sustainable as it grows to span multiple major areas such as organizational management, billing, component management, and more.
Working with sovity is increasing my skills as a software engineer and architect as well as teaching me how to work in a demanding and diverse startup environment. I hope that my experiences working here will be able to carry over into future software engineering scenarios that require robust development for a quickly growing product.
If you find the subject of data sovereignty and what it's like to work at a German startup interesting, then you might want to drop by to see my presentation. I look forward to seeing you there!
This internship is important to me personally because I am living in a world where data on me is being increasingly collected and used without me consiously knowing it. Companies such as Facebook, Google, and large third-party advertising companies, whose cookies you may have seen in your browser (adds.doubleclick.net or whatever)--they're profiling us all as we go throughout our days. When I work with sovity, however, I am working towards a world where data is shared intentionally in a controlled way so that the producers of data still have control.
Thank you!
