Title of Work:
The Promotion and Control of Physical Activity to Fight Against Sedentarism
Abstract:
The completion of frequent physical activity is important for the health and longevity of any given person. One of the main objectives of the fitness industry is to motivate people to adopt and maintain healthy habits with respect to exercise. This report details the methods I used during my fieldwork experience at Club Atlético Montemar to create an environment where patients and clients could find enjoyment in their training or rehabilitation from injury or surgery. These methods include designing individualized exercise programs for clients based on their specific goals, creating virtual fitness content for clients to complete at their own pace and convenience, as well as applying a fitness approach when working with physical therapy patients. Additionally, this report will examine the host language acquisition process as well as the linguistic phenomena of sociolinguistics, morphology, syntax, and phonology with a focus on their manifestation in the Valencian Community or, more specifically, the Alicantian region. A subsequent analysis of the degree of my own personal adoption or rejection of the region specific linguistic phenomena will be provided. Ultimately, this report will describe my relationship with Bennet’s Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS), a framework that allows for the categorization of one’s intercultural competence. Using Bennet’s model, I was able to determine both my initial and final levels of intercultural competence in order to analyze my progress throughout my time abroad.
Title of Work (IGP Language):
Abstract (IGP Language):
Elevator Pitch Transcript:
Hello! My name is Ben Aguila and I spent my year abroad in Alicante, Spain. I am studying exercise science as well as modern languages with an emphasis in Spanish. At the University of Alicante, however, I took classes within the degree program of physical activity and sports science. I completed my fieldwork at Club Atlético Montemar in Alicante and titled my project "The promotion and control of physical activity to fight against sedentarism." Club Atlético Montemar is a holistic family fitness center fully equipped with a gym, cycle room, CrossFit area, soccer field, an olympic length swimming pool, pádel courts, both hard and clay tennis courts, and physical therapy clinic. For my project, I worked under the club's fitness director and physical therapist to gain hands-on experience working with patients and clients. I also created virtual fitness content for the gym's current and future personal training clients in an effort to develop client outreach to accomodate for Covid-19 guidelines and restrictions. My project is interesting in the sense that it does not involve traditional research or lab work; it was very person-to-person based as I interacted daily with clients, patrons, and colleagues. My work at Montemar is particularly interesting to me in that it combines the practices of fitness and sports rehabilitation, a combination that I hope to successfully offer as an aspiring physical therapist and strength and conditioning specialist. I believe others will find my project interesting because the importance of regular exercise is a relatable concept for most people to understand. Some key takeaways from my work at Montemar include the importance of individualized training or rehabilitation plans to increase client/patient compliance, skills for effective delivery of group fitness classes, and strategies for creating desirable virtual fitness content so that clients understand that they can successfully exercise in multiple settings with or without a gym. I really believe that my experiences with this project will transfer to future academic and professional endeavors. Thank you.
