Title of Work:
Researching how to create smart logistics tracking systems
Abstract:
My internship was through the Chair of Material Handling and Warehousing with the Technical University of Dortmund. The chair of material handling and warehousing is a research and teaching chair that focuses on logistics and the supply chain. Logistics is the Planning, coordination, implementation, and delivery of products and services from point A to point B. My internship was in logistics research and specifically intralogistics. Intralogistics is the application of conventional logistics with high level computer aid. My project was to help with the design of a video dataset, that could be used to train a smart camera system. After the training, the system would be able to recognize different kinds of pallets, boxes, and forklifts. The camera system would be able to track the position of each recognized object and tell a user where the specific object they are looking for is, based on the most recent camera data.
Title of Work (IGP Language):
Forschung darüber, wie man intelligente Logistik-Tracking-Systeme erstellt
Abstract (IGP Language):
Elevator Pitch Transcript:
My name is Rose Capistrant, and the title of my presentation is “Researching how to create smart logistics tracking systems”. I worked with IGP and several German instructors and found an internship with an engineering chair at the technical university of Dortmund. The chair of material handling and warehousing is a research and teaching chair that focuses on logistics and the supply chain. Logistics is the Planning, coordination, implementation, and delivery of products and services from point A to point B. An example of logistics is shipping containers, which can have products from multiple different companies, but the person shipping them still needs to know where each product is this the shipping process. One of the specific areas of logistic the university chair looks at is intralogistics, which integrates computer software and computer intelligence with traditional logistics tasks. The main projects while I was there, was in intralogistics and how we could use engineering, computers, and robots to automate the logistics process. This idea is not unique to Germany but it is very heavily researched and implemented. My project was to help with the design and creation of a video dataset, that could be used to train a smart camera system. The camera system would be able to track the position of each object and tell a user where the specific object they are looking for is, based on the most recent camera data. I found this project very interesting, as it required a lot of knowledge about computer systems and engineering, which I had little knowledge of that going into the internship. I got a lot more practice with the engineering design process, which has significantly helped me with my capstone project. If you are interested in learning more about my internship, feel free to come to my presentation.
