Title of Work: 

Sustainable Agriculture: Crop Rotations, Soil Health, and Crop Residue Use; Linguistic and Cultural Analysis of Chile

Abstract:

During my time in Chile, I spent a semester doing an internship in the soil laboratory run by Doctor Mauricio Schoebitz. In the first half of my internship, I worked with Natalie Silva. With her I helped with various tasks and investigations, including the inoculation of plants with bacteria to see the impact in their growth. I also did work for Doctor Schoebitz, for whom I measured the roots of trees. For the second half of my internship, I assisted Sandra Arevalo with her bachelor’s thesis. She was investigating the impact of crop rotation on the soil and plant health. With Sandra and Natalie I learned extensively about the measurement of various soil nutrients. Culturally, I learned that Chileans are not nearly as cold as they’re made out to be. This stereotype is false, they are generally open and kind. With regards to the language, I learned extensively about the differences in dialect between the various Spanish speaking countries.

Durante mi tiempo en Chile, pasé un semestre haciendo una pasantía en el laboratorio de suelos con el Doctor Schoebitz. En la primera mitad de mi pasantía, trabajé con Natalie Silva. La ayudé con varios trabajos e investigaciones, incluyendo la inoculación de varias plantas para ver el impacto en su crecimiento. También hice tareas para el Profesor Mauricio, incluyendo la medición de varias raíces de árboles. Para la segunda mitad de mi pasantía, ayudé a Sandra Arevalo con su tesis de pregrado. Ella investigaba el impacto de la rotación de cultivos en la salud de los suelos y de los cultivos. Con Sandra y Natalie aprendí cómo medir niveles de varios nutrientes en suelos. Culturalmente aprendí que los chilenos no son tan fríos como dicen. Hay un estereotipo así pero mi experiencia fue al contrario. Son abiertos y amables. En cuanto a la lingüística, aprendí mucho sobre las diferencias en dialecto entre los varios países hispanohablantes.
