Title of Work: REVEAL Corsi-Rosenthol Box: Monitoring and Improving the air quality of the Air in High Schools
Abstract:
The research during my internship was centered on the question how can we create a cheap air filter for high schools in the region? The goals of the research were to create a Corsi-Rosenthal Box with local materials in Chile, clean the air in schools and warm the air for the winter. The project had two parts; investigate ways to filter and heat the air and look at variations of the Corsi-Rosenthal Box. Not only did I learn things about mechanical engineering during the internship, I also learned Chilean Spanish. Every Spanish is slightly different depending on the region. Example: “beans” vs “beans”, “corn” vs “corn”. They also put “‘po” at the end of some words and phrases. They also express how they feel in the size of the expressions. Example: “I LOOOOOOOVE this movie!!!!!” They speak with energy and show how they feel in the way they speak. OUtside of my internship, I also met local people in Chile who helped me with aspects related to the culture and the language.
Title of Work (IGP Language):
REVEAL Corsi-Rosenthol Box: Monitoreo y Mejoramiento de la Calidad del Aire en Colegios
Abstract (IGP Language):
Elevator Pitch Transcript:
Holiiii my name is Janelle Peña I am studying Mechanical Engineering and Modern Language with a Spanish emphasis. I had the wonderful opportunity to study abroad in Concepcion Chile. I chose to go to Chile for many reasons, but one of them was when I was growing up I heard stories about my nana great and Papi and all their adventures in Chile and if I got the chance to go to take it. So because of IGP I was able to go!
In Chile I got the opportunity to meet many wonderful people who helped me learn more about the culture and the language. They taught me that when you greet people you give them a hug and a kiss on the cheek. They helped me understand some words that are different. Like how beans aren't frjoles they're porotos, and choclo versus maiz for corn. Also how they use 'po all the time. sepo, yapo, vamapo, They also talk really fast so they were kind to slow down when asked even if I had to ask them to slow down or repeat more than once. I found that it was super important to get out of my comfort zone, try new things, and not be afraid to fail and then learn.
For my internship I got to work with Riley, and our project was to create a Corsi-Rosenthal Box with local materials available in Chile and make them as quiet and inexpensive as possible. We then were able to put these Corsi-Rosenthol air filters into schools. It was really cool creating these DIY air filters. Working on this project helped me get excited for my mechanical engineering courses that I am taking this semester., such as fluid dynamics and machine design.
I want to thank the wonderful people I met in Chile for their kindness that they shared. I want to thank Isabel Rivera, and Andrea Martinez for giving me the great opportunity to work with them on their project. As well as the opportunity to work with Tomas Chomarro and Riley Frisell on this project and the great collaboration we were able to accomplish together. Last but not least I want to thank the staff at the Universidad de Concepcion and the IGP staff at NAU for helping make the internship a successful one even with all the hiccups and surprises that came along the way. Thank you guys so much for helping me learn and grow in many ways academically, professionally and personally. Thank you I am so very grateful for this opportunity.
