An Experience: Informative Prenatal Care and Creating a Positive Pregnancy and Postpartum Journey.
Abstract:
Antenatal care is defined as the routine health control of presumed healthy pregnant women, in order to diagnose diseases, obstetric conditions, and to provide information about lifestyle, pregnancy, delivery and postpartum. There is an increasing use of maternity schools in many countries that cover a more personalized knowledge of what healthcare providers are advising. This study follows the educational practices of a maternity school located in Madrid called Bel & Mums, focusing on the courses offered, themes present and how they benefit the clients well being. This report will entail my future use of this experience in bridging the gap of obstetrics to pediatrics. Additionally, this report will examine the acquisition process, linguistic phenomena of Spanish, and how I evolved from the initial defense stage to the adoption phase within the DMIS model (Bennett, 1993).

La atención prenatal se define como el control rutinario de la salud de mujeres embarazadas presuntamente sanas, con el fin de diagnosticar enfermedades, condiciones obstétricas y brindar información sobre el estilo de vida, el embarazo, el parto y el posparto. En muchos países se utilizan cada vez más escuelas de maternidad que cubren un conocimiento más personalizado de lo que aconsejan los proveedores de atención médica. Este estudio sigue las prácticas educativas de una escuela de maternidad ubicada en Madrid llamada Bel & Mums, centrándose en los cursos ofrecidos, los temas presentes y cómo benefician el bienestar de los clientes. Este informe detalla mi futura aplicación de esta experiencia para cerrar la brecha entre la obstetricia y la pediatría. Además, este informe examinará el proceso de adquisición, los fenómenos lingüísticos del español y cómo evolucioné desde la etapa de defensa inicial hasta la fase de adopción dentro del modelo DMIS (Bennett, 1993).

Hi! My name is Haley Mullins and my project focuses on “Creating a Positive Pregnancy and Postpartum Journey Through Informative Antenatal Care”.
A little bit about me is that I study Biomedical Sciences and Modern Languages with an emphasis in Spanish at NAU along with a chemistry minor and spent my study abroad year in Madrid, Spain. In Spain I attended the University Carlos Tercero de Madrid.
At the University of Carlos Tercero de Madrid I took classes under their biomedical Engineering Major. The four classes that I took included History of Art, History of Cinema, Programming and Introduction to biomedical engineering. The classes were interesting and I enjoyed them. It was great to be able to see the engineering side of Biomedicine with the added benefit of learning that information through another country's educational system.
I completed my internship at Bel and Mums. Bel and Mums is a multidisciplinary maternity school that provides a community of promoting a positive journey for both expats and Spanish natives both before and after pregnancy. I was drawn towards this internship because it is not standard laboratory work, and instead allowed me to be in the field and understand the inner workings of an maternity school setting in Spain and the care that they provide. At Bel and Mums I worked under the owner and head coordinator and learned how to create an effective and positive community for many different people from all around the world. At Bel & Mums I participated in a variety of different services in order to inform the general public and make families feel more comfortable. Overall, I could not have asked for a better internship than the one I was able to experience at Bel and Mums. I learned so much, not only about maternity care and pediatric first aid but also about the Spanish used in a clinical setting and the dynamic of customer - staff relationships in Spain. Completing my internship in Madrid allowed me to gain a multicultural perspective about the importance of diversity and global understanding in the healthcare field.
During my time in Madrid my language skills improved drastically. Without going abroad my understanding of the Spanish language would not have been as great. In Madrid I not only learned a new dialect of Spanish but I learned a great deal about the Spanish culture. The best part of going abroad was being able to not only attend events that are important to the Spanish people but also learn about these cultural traditions and adopt them into my daily life here in the United States.
To conclude these are some photos of my time abroad. I was very fortunate to have most of my family visit me at some point in Spain. I am very grateful I got to share just a small part of my study abroad experience with them, introduce them to a new culture and have those everlasting memories.
