Faculty of Sciences,Charles University, Prague, Viničná 7

June 8th-9th, 2023

The name of Prof. Bohumil Němec (1873–1966) would undoubtedly belong to the narrowest circle of candidates in an imaginary poll about the most important Czech scientific personality of the 20th century. It stands not only at the beginning of Czech and Slovak, but also European experimental plant biology focused on the study of the cellular foundations of developmental and physiological processes. At the same time, he was extremely active in academic and political public life in the newly founded post-war Czechoslovakia.

The aim of the two-day conference, organized under the auspices ofthe  Charles University Rector, Prof. Milena Králíčková,  is to gain insight into the personality of Bohumil Němec both in the context of his time, predecessors and contemporaries, and the ideological currents of that time - that is, as a public figure and thinker. At the same time, however, also as the initiator and driver of the scientific program of experimental plant study, which continues and is successfully developed at our universities and institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

The first day of the conference (in Czech) will be dedicated to Němec's personality in the context of the time, the second day (in English, program here, speakers here) to the current state of plant biology research in relation to Němec's original impulses.
