Service as Action

The goal for students’ participation in Service and Action is for students to extend their learning beyond the classroom by taking purposeful action to affect the world around them and making a difference for people, animals and the environment.

By engaging in purposeful action, students progress through the following three stages:

  • Awareness and Understanding: understanding the needs of the community and the student’s own role in the community

  • Action: active involvement in service activities within the community

  • Reflection: reflecting on the quality of the experience and areas of personal weakness and strength that have been revealed as a result of the experience

Student Learning Outcomes

As an MYP student, IHS students should work to meet the following goals as they complete service learning activities:


  1. Become more aware of their own strengths and areas for growth

  2. Undertake challenges that develop new skills

  3. Discuss, evaluate and plan student-initiated activities

  4. Persevere in action

  5. Work collaboratively with others

  6. Develop international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism and intercultural understanding

  7. Consider the ethical implications of their actions.

Requirements

Overall, all Service as Action activities must:

  • Meet at least one of the seven learning outcomes from above

  • Address a need within a community

  • Involve interaction with people

  • Involve reflection on the outcomes and personal learning

  • Have a level of commitment

  • Have a responsible adult supervisor who understands the activity and will review your participation


*Students cannot receive a financial reward (payment), grade, or other material benefit. All family duties (mowing lawns, babysitting, doing chores, etc.) do not count.

**Students may not work with dangerous equipment nor miss school to complete hours of service.

Remember that you are representing IHS, your family, and yourself whenever you participate in a service and action activity. Please leave the community you served thinking appreciatively of you and your contribution.
