Hello! My name is Joel Fowler, and I am over the moon to be teaching 5th grade at STAR this year! 5th graders are the best! This is my fourth year teaching 5th grade at STAR, and my 8th year teaching 5th grade overall!
My educational history includes a BA from Azusa Pacific University, and a Master’s of Education (with an emphasis in Reading Literacy) from Loyola Marymount University. I also was a Teach for America corps member, and taught 7th grade pre-algebra in Philadelphia! I am an avid reader, and especially love that teaching allows me to instill/encourage a passion for reading in my students.
Before becoming a teacher, I paid for college as an EMT in LA County--I worked for ambulance companies and hospitals in Burbank, Long Beach, Downey, Downtown LA, and North Hollywood. If anyone needs a band-aid -- I'm your guy!
Fun facts about me outside of school:
I love being a dad to my energetic 5 year old daughter, Joy, and my 2 year old son, Joel Jr. Family is everything to me, and it has been amazing seeing my little family grow and watching my daughter be such a good sister to her baby brother!
I love all things sports. I am a HUGE Kings fan, and also root for the Giants and 49ers. I'm really into disc golf (and regular golf), and I played rugby in college!
I'm an avid reader. When I was in elementary school my favorite books were The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, and Harry Potter.
I love coffee! Nitro cold brew coffee is my favorite treat. My favorite drink from Starbucks is a Venti Iced Coffee with a splash of creamer and 1 sugar (no classic sweetner).
I have a very international family. My dad was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and my mom grew up in Argentina. We have family in New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, Mexico, Switzerland, and all over the globe!
Rugby is life for my family--we have a tradition of going to the Rugby 7's tournament every year in Las Vegas.
I have a tiny Malty-poo named "Puppers" that spends most of his day sleeping while simultaneously avoiding the bear hugs that my daughter is constantly trying to give him.
