The Hornets sadly saw their hopes for a state run and their 2024 season end against a tough 3A Tolono Unity team with a loss of 24 - 47. It was a bittersweet day for the entire team, but especially for the fourteen seniors who have played together since their freshman year. The team ended the year with a 10 - 2 record and Conference Champion title. On Tuesday, December 10, they reminisced about the season and their high school football careers with the coaches and the football players from all levels -- freshmen through varsity. Football players were honored with awards from NCHS, the conference, the region, and the state.

The NCHS Swim Team finished their 2024 season with a successful showing at IHSA Sectionals at Edwardsville. The Medley Relay team of Sailor Gutzler-Dlbala, Evie Reams, Lainey Fletcher, and Scarlet Konkel placed 5th. The 200 Free Relay team of Scarlet Konkel, Evie Reams, Jaylen Jones, and Lainey Fletcher placed 6th. Congraulations on a great season, Hornettes!
Lainey Fletcher, Rylee Habbe, Jaylen Jones, Evie Reams, Scarlet Konkel, Sailor Gutzler-Dlbala, and Coach Laura Schubert.
We asked our NCHS Senior Swimmers to reflect on their swimming career. Lainey Fletcher reflected, "I really enjoyed swimming the past few years at NCHS. I love being able to swim during the school year instead of just on the summer swim team. It is really rewarding going with my team and being able to medal in both relays and seeing all of our hard work pay off. The most challenging thing is getting out to practice with a busy schedule. It was all worth it being able to beat my fastest time in both of the individual events I swam at the meet. This sport is so exciting and fills you with so much adrenaline that it's hard not to absolutely love doing it. I'll definitely miss being with the team as I've swam with these girls my entire life. I know they'll do great next year!"

Senior Swimmers Lainey, Scarlet, and Sailor.
Senior Scarlet Konkel shared a look back at her time on the NCHS Swim Team. "Because I am also a volleyball player and the volleyball season occurs at the same time as IHSA girls’ swimming, it was difficult for me to find time to practice. Something that made it even more difficult was that Nashville doesn’t have an indoor pool and the nearest one for me is in Centralia. Trying to balance volleyball, swimming, and school was very difficult and some days I even had to get up really early and practice before I came to school. I practiced on my own most days; sometimes when my self-motivation was lacking practice in general was challenging. Not always having a coach at practice makes you realize that swimming does take a lot of self-motivation and dedication. My freshman year I had my senior sister, Hazel, there to push me at practices in the morning, but since then, it’s just me at practice having to find a way to push myself."
"I have been swimming since I was 4 years old. I started because my older sisters swam before me. For me a very rewarding part of swimming was the lessons I learned about hard work, dedication, and motivation. Swimming has individual and team races. It has taught me that no one can do the work for me. If I want to win a race or drop time in a race then I have to be willing to put in the hard work and the many hours of practice it takes to do so. While I find these lessons extremely rewarding, to me the greatest reward I have from swimming when the race is over and I’m out of the water, is the friendships and memories I have made through swimming. My NCHS teammates are all also my summer swim teammates so I have gotten to know them well."
Scarlet says that "while I say swimming is about hard work and dedication, for me it’s also an escape. With volleyball I have pressure, teammates counting on me, and if I make a mistake it affects everyone on the team. Swim allows me to clear my mind and when I’m in the water at practice, swimming is all I think about. It gives me a break from overwhelming everyday life. I will miss having swimming as an outlet everyday to clear my mind. As I said, I have been swimming for a long time. Many of the swimmers on the team have been my teammates for many years so we have grown close with each other. I will miss all of my teammates that make the long seemingly endless breaks of sitting around waiting for my race at meets more enjoyable. While many events are individual, the relays are a team effort. Swimming relays with my teammates is also something I will greatly miss. The thing I will miss most is swim meets with all my teammates."

On October 18, 2024, Evie Reams completed in the IHSA Tennis Sectionals at Kaskaskia College. Evie won the first match she played against Centralia's Loren Niederhoffer with a 6-1 and 6-1. The next match was against Salem's Ella Robinson. Evie shared, "My second match was the longest match I have ever played. The match ended up going for approximately 3 and a half hours. At one point during the match my hands were bandaged up due to all the blisters. After many long and great points, I lost the match in the third set." The scores for the second match were 6-4, 4-6, and 1-6. Evie will remember the 2024 tennis season as "a very fun one. I am continuing to improve. At times it can be challenging to get practices in with me being the only one on the team. Luckily, Coach Renth helped out to set up practice matches with other teams. All of the coaches and players were very welcoming." Evie also credits coaches Brian Pasero and Kristy Reams for practicing with her every week. Finally, Evie would like to thank "Mr. Begnado for being the best tennis supporter out there and coming to my matches. I am very excited for two more years of High School tennis." Congraulations on a great season, Evie!

The Hornets came to play on Friday, October 18 and showed the DuQuoin Indians that the Hornets were king of the conference with a winning score of 28 - 14. The Hornets had a small misstep on the second carry of the game that the Indians excitedly recovered, but it was the Hornet defense who resoundingly stopped the Indians on the goal line four times to restraighten the pace of the game. Head coach Stephen Kozuszek was proud of the team telling the Southern Illinoisan, "no matter how bad things are going, these guys don't get down. They move on to the next play and that allows us to move the ball a little bit and flip the field." The Washington County News reported that the Hornet defense "limited DuQuoin to 225 total yards, of which 67 was on one play. Senior Brynner Inman had a sack and was in the Indian backfield all day. Seniors Griffin Bochantin and Parker Schoenberg had tackles for losses. Senior Brance Luessenheide and junior Bryce Schettler had double digit tackles. The Nashville offense was led by Kollbaum who finished with 25 carries for 253 yards and 4 touchdowns. Klingeman had 91 yards through the air and 38 with his feet. Diedrich had 4 catches for 27 yards to lead the team, Schoenberg 2 catches for 18 yards, Hug had 17 yards, Luessenheide had 18 yards, and Turner rounded it out with 14 yards on the night." About the game, senior Samuel Kollbaum told The Southern Illinoisan, "we came into this game knowing what was on the line, and we finished what we started." The Hornets host the Dupo Tigers on senior night on Friday, October 25. Knowing it's a special night, Kollbaum told the Southern: "we don't take anything for granted. We make sure to enjoy these moments."
Offensive gains happen when the offensive line executes beautifully, and that it did against the Indians. In this play, senior Samuel Kollbaum has a perfectly sized hole just big enough to squeeze through to plow over the defense. This Hornet hole was provided by four key Hornets: junior Bryce Schettler with the down block, senior Daven Hug with a kick out block, sophomore Carter Seaton with a tunnel block, and sophomore Kam Emrick with a second level block.
Senior Brynner Inman lets the Indian offense know who's controlling this game.
Senior Hayden Klingeman strongly advances the ball.
Senior Samuel Kollbaum just squeezes inside the pylon with his second of four touchdowns for the night.
Senior Brance Luessenheide is a tackling phenom this year.
Sophomore Gannon Turner had his work cut out for him on this extra point, and he kept his head and his foot straight to score the point.
Klingeman passes to senior Daven Hug for the Hornet advance.
Senior Will Diedrich hits the Indian ball carrier.
Senior Parker Schoenberg gains significant ground for the Hornets.
The Hornets know they've secured their spot in the IHSA playoffs and will find out their ranking and class on Saturday evening. We can't wait to watch these boys in Playoff action.

Hornet and Hornette Golf Season Ends
Though it wasn't the season ending that the Hornet and Hornette teams and individuals had hoped and set goals for, NCHS couldn't be any prouder of our boys and girls golfers. Hold your heads high, NCHS golfers, and know that we are so proud of you. You golfed in intense heat, on beautiful days, in inclement weather, at your favorite courses, and on your not-so-favorite courses. You traveled some good distances and just to your local course at Memorial Park. And through it all, you played your game with integrity and dedication, faced challengers you knew and those you met for the first time, and most importantly you made memories with your friends, teammates, and coaches that you will cherish forever. This season is over, but you will golf again and we'll be there rooting for you all the way.
Hornette Volleyball Is Making Waves
The Hornettes are 24 - 3. Yes, you heard that correctly...23 - 3. That's an nine-game winning streak since they've come out of the Mascoutah tournament in mid-September. This week the Hornettes headed south on Tuesday, 10/8/24, and took down the Frankfort Redbirds in two sets winning 25 - 8 and 25 - 15. The next night they hosted Centralia and finished them in two sets winning 25 - 13 and an impressive 30 - 28. In their final game of the week, the Hornettes traveled to Benton and routed them in just two sets as well. The Hornettes scored 17 points in the first set before Benton even scored their first point. The Hornettes closed out the match with 25 - 8 and 25 - 14 sets.
The Hornette seniors...Alana Kujawa, Carly Kasten, Scarlet Konkel, and Ellie Bartling...are no doubt enjoying every moment of this winning season. Keep Ellie in your prayers next week as she undergoes surgery for an injury sustained in the first match up of the volleyball season. Any injured athlete knows it's a tough role to fill as an injured teammate as it requires an unselfish heart and love for the game and your teammates.

What touted for weeks as one of the great matchups of the local football seasons turned out to be a domination of the the Hornets over the Benton Rangers on Friday, October 4, for the Hornet Homecoming Game. Hornet Football Gets Down and "Dirty" Against Frankfort
The remnants of the forceful Hurricane Helene might have postponed the Hornets' Friday night game against Frankfort, but the rain couldn't stop the Hornets' physical offense and defense. When the Hornets took the field on Saturday, 9/28/24, it was still raining from the night before, and field conditions could only be described as muddy and mucky. The Hornets found their footing after a few missteps and never looked back beating the Redbirds 24 - 6. The Hornet defense was phenomenal holding Frankfort to just 71 yards total in the game. Not to be outdone, the Hornet offense opened the paths for Samuel Kollbaum to rush for 179 yards on 28 carries with 2 touchdowns. The Washington County News reported that the "defense’s leading tacklers were Kollbaum and Bryce Schettler, seniors Griffin Bochantin and Brynner Inman had tackles for loss, and Will Diedrich had an interception. Offensively, Hayden Klingeman ran for 74 yards with a touchdown and in the windy and rainy conditions, he completed 6/11 passes for 42 yards and an interception. Diedrich had 10 yards on the ground, and Carson Seaton had 11 yards rushing. Isaac Blazier led the way with 5 catches for 31 yards, and Kollbaum rounded it all out with 1 catch for 11 yards." The Hornets are excited to host the Benton Rangers at the NCHS Homecoming on Friday, 10/4/24.

It was a beautiful day for golf on Tuesday, 9/24/24, at Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Carbondale, and the Hornettes came to play. The team score was a combined 377, which was 23 strokes ahead of the 2nd place AJ team in the Mississippi Division. The Hornette win is the fourth straight league title and 14th overall since the RWR Conference was formed in 1993 according to The Southern. “I’m happy that we got the win,” Nashville head coach Doug Kell told The Southern. “I saw a lot of un-solid performance out there, but you know what... when you get the job done, that’s all that really matters in the end.
We are definitely going to have to go to work if we want to improve at the regional, sectional, and hopefully, state as a team. Winning conference, though, is always Goal No. 1 as a team. So, we accomplished that goal.” Junior Brynn Stiegman was the Individual Conference Champion on the Mississippi side for the third year in a row. Brynn told The Southern, “It feels really great because of all the work and effort I’ve put into this and then be rewarded. My game’s all come together for me. I practiced a lot over the summer and played in a lot of tournaments. Individual scores for Nashville included: Brynn Stiegman (81), Karlie Stein (92), Arabella Alfeldt (97), Lily Emge (107), Siena Popejoy (113), and Chloe Kurwicki (122).

Varsity Hornets OutPower the AJ Wildcats
With a 48 - 6 domination of Anna Jonesboro on Friday, 9/20/24, the NCHS Hornets are 3 - 1 on the season. The Hornet offense and defense was no match for AJ, and a 40 point lead and a running clock made for a quick game in "The Pit." Defensively, the Hornets only allowed the Wildcat offense to gain just under 100 yards. Senior Brance Luessenheide led the team in tackles followed closely by senior Parker Schoenberg. Schoenberg, junior Bryce Schettler, and senior Griffin Bochantin all had tackles for loss. Offensively, the Hornet touchdowns were scored by Hayden Klingeman (1), Samuel Kollbaum (4), and senior Isaac Blazier (1). The Hornet touchdowns set up sophomore Gannon Turner for several extra point attempts, and he was good with 4 - 5 of them. Also adding to the offense was senior Grady Kirchner with 47 yards on 6 carries and senior Will Diedrich with 4 catches for 36 yards.

Friday, 9/6/24, was a perfect evening for football at NCHS, but the ending score wasn't perfect for the Hornets. The Hornets and the Carterville Lions went head to head and back and forth throughout the game, but the Hornets came up short when the final seconds ticked off the clock losing 20 - 16. Coach Kozuszek shared after the game that the game could have just as easily been a win for Nashville, but indicated that when the final whistle blew, we, unfortunately, were on the wrong side of the score. According to the Washington County News, the final offensive states for the Hornets showed: Hayden Klingeman completed 16 of 23 passes for 174 yards, two interceptions and a touchdown pass and had 74 yards rushing; Isaac Blazier led the Hornet offense with 7 catches and 94 yards with a touchdown; Daven Hug had 4 for 27 yards; Samuel Kollbaum secured 3 catches for 24 yards and ran for 116 yards on 20 carries with a touchdown; Parker Schoenberg had 2 catches for 28; and Will Diedrich notched 1 catch for 9 yards. Defensively, Brance Luessenheide led the team with 7.5 tackles while Diedrich finished the game with 2 tackles and 2 interceptions.
