Being in Puerto Rico was an incredible cultural experience. Between touring Old San Juan and learn cultural dances, the Nardin Academy students learned more about the Puerto Rican culture and way of life. We spent time not only on beaches and in the ocean, but also in cities.
As two groups, we set out in the ocean to see the sea life and structures that had been submerged under water. We saw different fish, sea turtles, sea urchins, coral reefs, and at my expense, a baby jellyfish. I technically didn’t see it, but I definitely felt it! Another unforgettable experience was kayaking on the Bioluminescent Bay. Sadly, we could not capture videos because the light was too bright for a phone; however, the personal experience will live with us forever. The bay used to be brighter but sadly, due to pollutants killing the algae that makes the bay glow, the bay has slowly gotten dimmer and dimmer.
In terms of culture, I really enjoyed learning the art of mamba music and dancing, especially as a musician. We had just gotten off the beach and went straight into music. Who could ask for more? Not only did we dance, but we also zip lined. Going on one of the longest zip lining courses in the world was an experience I’ll never forget. We went over beautiful terrain and had the chance to hike it as well. It was the hardest workout of my life and the anxiety of falling was immense, but I look back at it as a truly memorable experience.
Finally, the food was delicious. Growing up with a Puerto Rican grandfather, I prayed for the day I tasted the food I grew up eating in the place of its origin. The authentic food was a change from what we normally eat in Buffalo. Everything tasted better, more fresh, and had a lot more seasoning. I am proud to say that the Puerto Rico Winter Mission trip was a success and I would gladly go back again!
