As many fans know, the weekly show Saturday Night Live (SNL) begins with a Cold Open. This is often a space where the cast pokes fun at recent political endeavors or proceedings. With the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, SNL took a different approach. Instead of their American cast commenting on the conflict, writers let Ukrainians use their own voices.
On February 27, viewers experienced a performance of a Prayer for Ukraine from the Ukrainian Chorus Dumka of New York. This touching performance displayed Ukrainian perseverance and the solidarity of the SNL team, a show with a strong influence on the American people. This inspired the show’s audience to reflect on the privilege to be watching television and reside in a country without war.
