Clubs, like sports and extracurricular activities, are important to our daily schedules as high schoolers. They are a way to meet people with similar interests as us, or just a way to pass time with friends. At most schools, clubs are after school–however, at Nardin, we have them during school, usually one a month, depending on the schedule. However, this limits our time to do the activities we love. Why is our schedule like this?
Some students believe it is simply so all students can participate in clubs, since many people have sports or other obligations after school–others speculate it is a plan to impress colleges, thinking that the more clubs we have on our resumes, the better. Although the current schedule may be conducive to everyone, it is far from convenient. Even if everyone can join a club, since the meetings are few and far between, we get virtually nothing done during our club times.
Instead of keeping this schedule, I believe we should have clubs after school, like every other school does. Although this may lower the number of people in clubs and may be less convenient for teachers, as they would have to stay after school longer, it would be more productive, more frequent, and have more people who are actually passionate about the club, rather than someone just being there because they have to. Nardin putting convenience over passion is a bad call, especially since they would never do such a thing for sports or musicals–activities that are considered “more popular.”
