Model UN, or Model United Nations, is one of Nardin’s most popular clubs, but what is it, who is in it, and why is it so important to Nardin?
Maysa Khan ‘22, a member of Model UN, describes the club as a group of students who debate on different real world issues.
Students connect with the world by functioning as the United Nations. To do so, they practice solving real world problems. Khan explains that they practice by developing their debate skills and researching through teamwork. In addition, the group’s knowledge of current events in the world grows, so students are prepared to stand their ground during debate.
Model UN is run by the group called the dias, or the chair. It consists of four seniors: Mia Endl, Emma Zabel, Mary Katherine Hartigan, and Natalie Hausmann.
The members of Model UN are a mix of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, Khan says, and they are always friendly to newcomers! She believes that new members can handle the club by working on it often. In her experience, returning members are also very helpful for them.
Major events coming up for Model UN include the New Member Conference, as well as the Chicago trip. Khan remarks that the New Member Conference is about returning members helping new members navigate through the club by a practice debate.
While the Chicago trip focuses on bigger issues with multiple schools and practicing in a new area, Khan says a couple fun features about the conferences and trips are utilizing their debate skills, her favorite-- making new friends, and visiting Chicago itself.
Further, Khan elaborates on how the conventions contribute to the club's reputation by students portraying their skill sets. These include their speech, teamwork, and debating expertise. They will showcase these qualities in front of many schools. In addition, the students will represent Nardin when they perform well.
Khan concluded that Nardin wanted a club that allowed the student body to have an outlet for people who love practicing those skills.
As for the future of Model UN, the Chicago and Bonaventure trips will be held. These trips were not held last year due to COVID-19, but now these events will help the club by encouraging more people to join.
