It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And what better way to get in the mood than asking what Nardin students and faculty hold as their favorite things this holiday season.
First of all, to settle the age-old question of when people start to listen to Christmas music, a whole 50% of the 56 surveyed said they begin after Thanksgiving, the next largest group being 23%, or 13 people who listen on December 1st or later. This conclusively shows that people at Nardin believe that Christmas music is not an all-year-round event, as only 5 of the surveyed listen the whole year.
Next, the top Christmas song was… “All I Want For Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey, with 11 votes. In second place was Wham’s "Last Christmas" with 10 votes. There was an impressive array of songs selected, with over 20 favorites.
The most popular Christmas or Holiday movie was Elf, starring Will Ferrel, coming in with 18 votes. No other movie quite matched those votes, but second place had Home Alone (both 1 and 2 included) with 13 votes. Other popular choices were Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, The Polar Express, and The Grinch. One person voted for Love Actually, a personal favorite of mine, and another for Rocky 1, although calling that a Christmas movie is perhaps even more of a stretch than Die Hard.
Nardin community members like lots of holiday activities, and the results of that question were pretty widely scattered. However, the top four activities, from most to least votes, were Skiing or Snowboarding (16 votes), Cozy Movie Night (14 votes), Baking Cookies (7 votes) and Sledding or Snow Tubing (5 votes). With any luck, over this break everyone will get to do some of these and other favorite activities!
Finally, the most anticipated question, how many snow days do students and faculty think we will have? The most popular answer was 2, with 24 votes, a respectable number that anyone would be happy with. One person said they do not want to jinx it by saying a number, which may be a good call. I’ll finish by saying that 5 not hopeful said none, and 4 extremely hopeful said 10. I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see how that plays out!
