On Friday March 15th, the Nardin high school finished out the week with the exhilarating and competitive annual Red Cross dodgeball tournament. The Red Cross club at Nardin Academy works each year to pull off this tournament and get maximum student and faculty participation. This year there were teams of 20 per grade, chosen by random selection from the students who signed up. As usual, faculty wore black, seniors wore white, juniors wore blue, red for the sophomores, and green for the freshmen.
Students had the opportunity to donate $3 to the Red Cross club to wear sweatpants, and students who donated were entered into a raffle with fun prizes such as a Panera gift card or a Nardin belt bag. The raffle was drawn live between each round of dodgeball, with prize winners ranging from all grades.
The game of dodgeball started with freshmen versus sophomores, with sophomores winning and eliminating the freshmen first round. Each round was 10 minutes long, with several rules to prevent injuries and arguments with the teacher referees, Ms. Kohl, Mr. Whalen, and Mr. Ladowski. The juniors then played the seniors, leading to a senior victory. Following the second round, a losers round was played between the juniors and freshmen resulting in a junior victory for some redemption.
Then, the heated championship game between the sophomores and seniors began, ending in an exciting win for the seniors. The Jacqueline V. Zanghi gym roared with cheers and chants throughout the afternoon as each grade battled for bragging rights and class pride. After beating the sophomores, the seniors played a team of Nardin faculty - and won yet again! It was an exhilarating day, especially for the seniors, but many controversies still cloud the Nardin dodgeball tournament. Why do the freshmen wear green and not the seniors? Is it rigged so the seniors win every year? Who was really refereeing the senior versus faculty game? The Academy may never know, but we do know that dodgeball is looked forward to every year and it is an amazing way to raise money to support the Red Cross club while channeling loads of school spirit. Get ready for next year to see who will bring home the victory of Dodgeball 2024-25!
