A cult classic, the Addams family has touched generations of viewers with its macabre humor and impishness. From Barry Sonnenfeld’s 1990s film adaptations to recent animated renderings, the ghoulish family remains emblematic of Halloween and gothic American culture. Despite its numerous variations throughout media forms and pop culture, the family has yet to be accurately represented–until now.
Though he acquired the rights to a stop-motion adaptation in 2010, Tim Burton did not get to complete the film due to a cancellation. However, Netflix’s Wednesday renews his opportunity to apply his quirky, whimsical aesthetic to the eccentric clan. Centering around the deadpan, crafty Wednesday Addams, the show follows her journey as she faces the challenges of a new boarding school and a grisly murder mystery.
The series stars young actress Jenna Ortega as she takes the torch from Christina Ricci, who portrayed the mischievous character in the iconic 90s films. Reflecting on the role, Ortega notes Wednesday’s Latina heritage, which has yet to be represented: “any time I have the opportunity to represent my community, I want that to be seen.”
A Disney alum, Ortega has recently displayed her impressive acting chops in more serious roles such as the A24 slasher, “X.” Joining her in the Wednesday cast is Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams, Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams, Christina Ricci, and others. The show premiered all eight episodes on November 23.
