It is no surprise that the movies are making a comeback. While the pandemic offered plenty of theater alternatives, such as Premier Access viewing for new releases on streaming services, nothing could ever replace going to the movies-- making your way to your seat, tubs of popcorn in hand, excitement blooming as the lights go down. With the comeback of the silver screen, October presents plenty of action and drama films, as directors deliver classics as well as projects beyond their conventional styles.
No Time to Die (Oct. 8)
It’s been quite the wait for this momentous end to Daniel Craig’s Bond career--two years to be exact--but fans breathe a worldwide sigh of relief as it hits the big screen. Though expectations are high, the impressive cast, including Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Ana de Armas (Knives Out), and Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), is sure to compensate for the long wait. The plot follows the disruption of agent 007’s retirement as he is called to defeat a menacing villain with lethal technology. Though Bond movies love their tropes--car chases, fight scenes, a tuxedo-swathed 007 gliding across the room--director Cary Joji Fukunaga is set to offer a fresh take on the classic, as he did with Jane Eyre (2011) and It (2017). In true Bond fashion, the film’s unprecedented call to surmount expectations is reminiscent of 007’s conquest of the impossible.
Dune (Oct. 22)
Whether you’re a fan of the 1965 novel or new to this sci-fi classic, Dune is sure to present an ever-refreshing take on dystopia. Set in the future where humanity has evolved into more powerful beings spanning throughout the universe, the film follows Paul Atreides as he fights to reach his full potential and save his people. With a star-studded cast featuring Timothee Chalamet (Little Women), Zendaya (Malcolm and Marie), and Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men), the film is sure to offer all the thrills of the 1984 David Lynch adaptation along with the strength of modern special effects. The implementation of advanced CGI to director Denis Villeneuve’s (Blade Runner 2049) futuristic take will no doubt fulfill author Frank Herbert’s creative vision.
The French Dispatch (Oct. 22)
Timothee Chalamet lovers are once again blessed this month, as he stars alongside Saoirse Ronan (Little Women) in Wes Anderson’s latest creation. The film will also feature familiar Anderson favorites, including Bill Murray (Groundhog Day), Tilda Swinton (Dr. Strange), and Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers). The film is another brainchild of Anderson and Roman Coppola, who dealt a hand in crafting Anderson’s quintessentially quirky style. Featuring a collection of stories about journalists in a fictional French city, it will undoubtedly deliver the blunt yet charming wit synonymous with Anderson’s work.
Last Night in Soho (Oct. 29)
Starring Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit) and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit), Last Night in Soho follows an aspiring fashion designer, Eloise, as she finds herself transported back in time in the body of Sandie, a 1960s nightclub singer. Amidst stewing passions, Eloise soon discovers the horror behind Sandie’s facade as her world begins to fall apart. Directed by Edgar Wright (Baby Driver, Ant-Man), the psychological thriller is sure to deliver gut-wrenching twists and tension. Though different from his usual satirical, lighthearted style, Wright will no doubt deliver an exhilarating film experience.
