A year and a half since our last interview, I had the chance to chat with indie rock band Innlet again. The last time we spoke, they had just released their second single, “Octopus Polaroid,” and had only played a few house shows. Since then, Innlet has been busy, putting out a five song EP, gaining a trombone player, and currently venturing into their first official tour. With all of their recent success, gaining 100k new monthly listeners on Spotify, I had to hear how this happened and what their plans are to continue their success.
Currently on the road with The Kilans, the band and I spoke while they were driving six hours from Wilmington, North Carolina to Atlanta, Georgia. On the road, Innlet’s lead guitarist Matt Heitzmann is in control of aux while drummer Max Di Rocco takes the lead on driving. They all pack into a car for their long trips, a trailer filled with equipment lugged behind them. Levi Miller, Innlet’s frontman, explained that the night before they were signed up to perform a house show at UNC-Wilmington but it was pouring rain. It was their first show of the tour and they had voyaged nine hours to get there, so they popped a tarp up and performed nevertheless.
On a high of excitement from the success of the night before, Innlet discussed opening for bands. Finding bands to tour with has come in various forms. Some came together through friendships with managers of other bands. Others, like The Kilans, were because of past shows they played together. After playing a show in New York’s Nightclub 101, the two bands kept in touch. Innlet has been able to see the impact of maintaining relationships like these, now on a tour across the east coast with the Salt Lake City based indie rock band. Innlet’s community of other indie rock bands has immensely expanded over the past year, opening for bands like Old Mervs, Easy Honey, and Cardinal Bloom. Having a network of similar genre bands has helped Innet continue to grow, both in the way of gaining fans and inspiration for songs.
Once their tour wraps up for the year, the New Jersey based band plans to sit down and write a second EP, which I am personally eager to hear. Their last EP, Flytrap, has some fun songs that have been particularly great for touring thanks to their upbeat melodies and hooks. Particularly, their hit “This Winter” is both a fan favorite and the band’s favorite song to play (which we concluded after they passed around the phone to all share their favorite song). With unique guitar solos and lots of brass instrumentation, the five songs are going to be difficult to top. With new inspirations though, such as Arcy Drive, Innlet is looking forward to the writing process. Miller explained that this next chapter will sound a bit different but they are still the same band at the heart of the music.
If you are as excited as me for Innlet’s future, be sure to follow them on Instagram and Spotify.
