This past weekend at All Things Go Music Festival in Maryland, I had the opportunity to sit down with music tastemaker Carly Bogie.
It was fitting to chat with Bogie at the festival as she was the one who originally influenced me to go, after promoting All Things Go for the past few years, even securing a job with them last year. She currently writes weekly newsletters for the festival’s subscribers, known as Boomfy’s Besties. These articles include a cornucopia of topics such as music, lifestyle, and fashion. Bogie is skilled in collage making (which she credits to Canva and more recently Procreate), where she spotlights All Things Go’s “Bestie of the Week” rising artists in aesthetically pleasing Instagram stories. Her work with the festival has caught the attention of many, including myself. She has been able to separate All Things Go from the other major music festivals by making the festival a year-round phenomenon rather than just one weekend. She makes sure that fans don’t forget about the festival and all of the magic there, securing a consistent returning audience.
Bogie’s work at the festival did not come without lots of drive and dedication. In her sophomore year of college she began posting online about her unique, ultra-niche Spotify playlists. With a total of 590, she has been able to organize these playlists in fun themes such as colors (“jade,” “cobalt blue,” “titanium white”) and Phoebe Bridgers lyrics (“anyway don’t be a stranger….,” “dog at ur door,” “when phoebe bridgers hands me the aux”). Her playlists have amassed her over 87k followers on social media platforms and 66k Spotify followers. Her music taste and personality has caught the attention of many as she is not your typical music tastemaker who has this elusive, exclusive vibe about them, but she is rather super welcoming to everyone in the music community. She is also a big promoter of supporting females in music, with her playlists featuring up and coming female artists. Back in 2021, she even said to me, at the time a middle school girl, “It makes me so happy that most of my followers are younger girls! Indie music is so commonly gatekeeped by young adult guys and I’m so excited I get to help good indie music become more accessible to younger girls!!” Bogie’s influence has become more than just music, but rather a community of building people up who have been previously looked down upon or neglected in the music industry.
Now based in Denver, Colorado, Bogie’s music journey is just getting started. She has recently begun interviewing artists with a creative spin by building personalized playlists with them. She has been able to feature artists such as FINNEAS, Inhaler, Flipturn, and Maude Latour, all of which she said were so fun in their own ways. She explained how she texted her friends and family excited after she booked the interview with FINNEAS and how surreal the whole process felt. With Inhaler, she did not know too much about them so she found it so exciting when they reached out to her requesting to make a playlist. Since then, she has been listening to a lot more of their music and has become a fan.
Wrapping up our chat, I had to ask which artists Bogie was most looking forward to seeing that day. After pondering the question, she chose Clairo, Lucy Dacus, and Hippo Campus. I also asked what artists she hopes will come to All Things Go next year; she answered with Phoebe Bridgers (her all-time favorite artist), Lorde, MUNA, and Charli xcx.
From her college dorm room to interviewing artists backstage at Red Rocks, Carly Bogie’s music industry career has been an impressive and exciting journey!
