Ira Scott started coaching at NCHS before Bud Berger and retired after Coach Berger retired. In fact, he started coaching here when athletes pole vaulted using bamboo poles. His specialty was the pole vault and he was known throughout Illinois for his expertise in the event. Coach Scott was inducted into the Track & Field Hall of Fame in 1986. Coach Scott also served as the Department Chairman of Physical Education/Driver’s Education as well as the Athletic director.
This award is named for George Cyr, who was the sprint coach at NCHS for the 1974 and 1975 seasons. In 1976 he became the Head Track & Field Coach (and switched to the distance races) at NCHS from 1974 until retiring in 2003. He was inducted into the Coaches Hall of Fame in 2001. His teams were perennially in the top half of the conference – usually in the top three. Coach Cyr believed that if everyone reached and attained personal records (PR’s) that the points would take care of themselves. The athlete who earns this award has surely experienced a large number of PR’s.
This award is named for John Perry, who was the throws coach at NCHS from 1975 until his retirement in 1997. Prior to 1975, JP had never coached any event in Track & Field. He was hired by Coach Cyr and became a student of the sport, developing into one of the finest throws coaches in the state. The school records in the shot put and discus were thrown under his guidance. This award goes not necessarily to the athlete on the team with the highest GPA, but to an athlete that truly embodies what is meant by the term “Scholar-Athlete”.
This award is named for Mike Stine, who was the first girl's head track & field coach to be named at Naperville Central in 1988. Under Coach Stine’s guidance, the girls track and field team thrived with 3 State Champions, 34 individual state placers, and 15 state relays. Over Coach Stine’s 31-year tenure Naperville Central had over 350 state qualifiers, won 8 Sectional Titles and numerous conference titles. There are many different ways that an MVP can be defined. One of the most eloquent definitions is that the MVP is the “...athlete that most affects the team’s line-up if she isn’t there.” This athlete is not necessarily the athlete that scores the highest point total. An athlete might be part of three relays and removing her from the line-up creates a hole in 3 events, whereas removing a high hurdler or discus thrower affects just 1 event.
This award is named after the class of 2020, whose senior season was unexpectedly cut short due to Covid-19 global pandemic. The thirteen seniors will be remembered as the greatest of teammates as they had to set their individual goals aside to support and encourage their Redhawk track & field family. The Redhawk Award honors the person that takes great pride in uplifting their teammates by having a selfless “we before me attitude”. This individual embodies the true meaning of what it means to be a member of a team, and what it means to be a Redhawk, as they put the needs of their fellow teammates ahead of their own.
This award is presented to a varsity athlete in each sport in honor of former athletic team manager, Tom Hoesch. Outstanding athletic ability is not the sole determinant for this award. The recipient of this award should demonstrate the qualities of spirit, loyalty, and determination to succeed that Tom possessed. The Red portion of the award bears tribute to courage in the face of adversity, and loyalty to team and athletes, and determination to succeed based on hard work. The White portion of the award typifies the spirit and pure character that Tom brought to each team with which he was associated
