“I liked the course structure as it was diverse. We went theory then practical, then theory then practical. It made the course more engaging.”
Taylor R.- S3, N5, H & NPA
"“I liked watching and analysing films that I hadn't seen before. I wasn't really that into films outside franchises like Marvel, but this class made me really into films due to how much I enjoyed 'The Shining'. Since then, I have probably watched over 100 new films”

“I enjoyed doing the practical activities as I was able to be creative and learn new skills.”

NPA Film (SCQF Level 6)- (& optional Bacc IP SCQF Level 7)
A primarily practical course suitable for those who have previously studied Media in the school, and want to further develop their theoretical studies of the subject and their practical skills, in lieu of an AH Media and without the pressure of an exam.
Pupils who have no previous experience in Media are also most welcome. Strengths in creative subjects like Art & Design, Drama and English, and technological subjects will be helpful, but nothing is more important or beneficial than a genuine interest in film.
The course is made up of a mixture of practical and theoretical units at both Level 5 & 6. They are:
Film & The Film Industry (Level 6)
Basic Video Camera Operations & Basic Video Editing (both Level 5)
Creative Project (Level 6)
These two Level 5 units and two Level 6 units allow pupils to gain a Level 6 (Higher level) award. As well as learning about camera operations and the editing process to produce a film project of their choice, pupils will study a series of films of particular genres. These genres, and indeed the films, will be decided by the pupils themselves. They will (COVID allowing) attend an event during the annual Into Film Festival.
Many of our students go on to study film related courses at college and universities across Scotland and the UK. While studying Media at Garnock, students have also been involved in BFI Academy, Short Courses at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and one of our very talented students was recently shortlisted in the Scottish Youth Film Festival. Superstars all!
