Why study Chemistry at Garnock?
Chemistry is a crucial part of our everyday lives. From the food that we eat to the air that we breath, everything we see, hear, smell and touch involves chemistry. From studying chemistry, you will learn about the important chemicals and reactions that happen around us, allowing us to develop a better understanding of life and the world we live in.
In S3 we study the following topics:
• Chemical Changes – you will learn about chemical reactions and factors that can affect them, the atom that forms the building blocks of life, and the bonding of elements to form new substances.
• Nature’s Chemistry – you will learn about many important everyday chemical products such as hydrocarbons (the back bone of fossil fuels, plastics and many cosmetics), alcohols/carboxylic acids and their many use and how to calculate the energy released from fuels in combustion reactions.
You will also learn many scientific skills essential for further study in all three sciences through carrying out a range of experiments.
