This Thursday is Valentine's Day. Students are welcome to bring in Valentine's for their classmates. We will set aside time to pass them out at the end of the day. There are 34 students in the class. I highly recommend NOT putting "To:" names and having your child just sign who it is from. It will take a very long time to pass them all out, otherwise.
Week of February 4, 2019

As a reminder, Interim Progress Reports went home with the children on Friday. Please review the report, sign and return the yellow copy. The white copy is for you to keep.

Week of January 7, 2019
Happy New Year
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and a restful break from school. It doesn't seem to matter how many times I do this, I can never wrap my head around how fast time goes by! It seems like we were just starting the school year, and now here we are in January. Although June seems far away, this part of the year flies by, and it will be summer before we know it.
Upcoming Teacher's Strike
It looks as though a strike is inevitable. The original strike date was January 10, but every day brings new developments and there is a possibility that it will now start Jan. 14. We will do what we can to keep you informed of changes, and continue to hope that things get settled before any disruption occurs. Teachers will be striking in front of Welby from 7:00-8:00 a.m. and 2:00-3:00 p.m. Whether you choose to send your children to school during the strike or keep them at home, parents and students are encouraged to join us and show support for public education during those picket times.
Business As Usual
Despite the possible disruption, we will not waste any time getting things started.
Science: Students will start their Earth Science rotation with Mrs. Kearns this Wednesday. Be sure to have your science comp books, and for those of you who like using a tote bag, have those at the ready.
Math: We will be jumping to module 5 and taking a look at fractions. Zearn accounts have been set to the correct lesson.
Language Arts: Our new unit in Wit and Wisdom is called "Extreme Settings," and should be very exciting!
Overall, I am looking forward to a fabulous rest of the year! How could it be anything other than awesome?
Week of December 10, 2018
All school library books must be returned to the library prior to going on break. We are not allowed to have books checked out over winter vacation. Students are welcome to check books out of the classroom library if they need something to read over vacation.
Thanks to our Room Mom, Negin, for compiling the list and organizing our Winter Lunch for this Thursday. A Google Doc was emailed if you would like to sign up to bring something.
We will have our next garage sale this Friday at the end of the day. All items should be priced ahead of time, either with a product list or price tags and must come in with the student the day of the sale.
Week of December 3, 2018
- We will be going to the school library this Wednesday. Please be sure to bring any books in that you have checked out.
- We are on schedule to take the end of module test for Module 3 this Friday. Review multiplication and division strategies. Practice materials will come home for students to study.

I hope everyone had a wonderful break and a lovely Thanksgiving. We are back for just three weeks before we are off for winter break.
Week of November 5, 2018
Conference appointment forms came home last week in the Weekly Work Folder, but if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me via Dojo, Remind, or email. Please be sure to bring your child with you to the conference.
Minimum Day dismissal 12:30 on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Tuesday dismissal at 1:30.
Candy Donations for our troops will be accepted until Monday, November 5.
Week of October 29, 2018
Check your child's weekly work folder for a purple appointment sheet with your scheduled conference time. Please sign and return the bottom half only to confirm that you will be able to attend your schedule. Please keep the top half as your reminder. If there is an issue with the time you were assigned, please contact me immediately so that we can work something out.
This Wednesday, we will kick off Halloween with our annual parade of costumes. Because the parade begins right at 8:15, students will come to school in their costumes (with clothes to change into afterwards). Parents are invited to join us for the parade. You can meet us out on the yard prior to the parade. Our wonderful room parents are organizing a little post-parade brunch. If you are able to, sign up to contribute to the buffet and have your child bring the items in with them in the morning.
My LAUSD Email
Currently I am able to receive emails at my LAUSD address, however, I am unable to send emails from that account. If you email me, I will respond back using email@example.com. Hopefully this will get resolved someday.
Week of October 22, 2018
I honestly cannot believe that it's already time to schedule conferences for our first reporting period! A purple request sheet is coming home on Monday and is due back by Friday. Please check off at least three blocks of time that you are available to conference with your child. I will send home your appointment time on Tuesday, October 30.
Week of October 15, 2018
Our first Garage Sale was a complete hit! We are already looking forward to our next one. (Date TBD)
Do you have an extra canvas or cloth tote bag lying around the house? If so, we thought we'd give using tote bags a try in helping us get our belongings to science when we rotate. We are looking for bags that are made of fabric and are large enough to fit over the backs of our chairs when not in use.
Thursday, October 18
Mid-Module 3 Assessment There WILL be a practice test coming home on Wednesday night to review. The main purpose of the practice test is get the students accustomed with the wording of the test. The concepts have all been taught by this point. Students should be able to **multiply using area models and standard algorithm **find area and the missing length when given area and width **find perimeter ** understand to find a number/length/width that is x times as long as a given number **solve multi-step word problems
Great Shake Quake Drill
We will be having our annual earthquake drill this Thursday. It's a good idea for students to bring hats to wear as they must sit outside while teachers run through drills.
Week of October 8, 2018
This Friday, we will be holding our very first Garage Sale! Super exciting and fun!
How does it work: Students bring in gently used items that they no longer love or use, but are still in working order, and sell them for Faux Dough. Students become business owners and will set up their own "stores" to sell their goods. Students keep the profits from their sales, which they can then use to buy items from other students or class coupons during Class Store.
What to sell:
Some students make their items to sell: art, origami, hair bows, etc. Most children bring in used items from home. Students can bring in one item, or 100. There will be several garage sales throughout the course of the year, so students may not want to sell everything in this first sale. Please make sure that all items that come in have been approved by YOU! There is no need to spend any money on garage sale items. That's definitely not the point. Unfortunately, students cannot sell any food items, such as baked goods, gum, or candy.
Week of October 1, 2018
Creative Writing Workshop
This year we have an amazing opportunity to learn from an expert! We are beyond excited for Ottilie's dad to come in and get us inspired about writing. We will be designating a special book (could be a comp book, a spiral notebook, or a journal with plenty of pages) to our weekly creative writing sessions. I know that some students may have a particular book at home that they'd like to use. If that is the case, please make sure to bring it in by this Friday, which will be our first Writer's Workshop.
Field Trip to Olivas Adobe
This Thursday, we will be heading to Ventura County for a fantastic field trip to Olivas Adobe. I must get a signed field trip slip and waiver for all students who wish to attend this trip (prior to Thursday). Parents who have expressed an interest in chaperoning this trip will receive additional information in your child's Weekly Work Folder on Tuesday.
Week of September 24, 2018
Interim Progress Reports Believe it or not, we've already been in school for six weeks. Interim progress reports will come home on Monday, September 24. Please sign and return the YELLOW COPY ONLY. Keep all white paperwork for yourself.
Class Dojo By now, most of you have joined Class Dojo using your child's code. We've really enjoyed using it in class so far. There are many additional features of Class Dojo other than tracking and rewarding behavior, including the same function of quick communication that our app Remind serves. I had not initially intended to use Dojo and I apologize for the abundance of log-ins and online resources. Once everyone joins, we can eliminate Remind and just use Dojo for class announcements and one-to-one communication.
End of Module 1 Assessment on Tuesday, September 25. This assessment is similar to the mid-module assessment we took a couple of weeks ago.
Field Trip Thursday, October 4, 2018 We are heading to The Olivas Adobe in Ventura to learn more about life in California during the Rancho era. This is a fantastic trip and we are so excited to be able to visit a piece of California history. We will need several volunteers to help supervise groups. Let me know if you are available to join us.
Week of September 17, 2018
Monday, September 17 is our first day of psychomotor. Students should come to school in comfortable clothes and shoes that they can run in. We are looking for a few parents to come in to help out during psychomotor. Please let me know if you are available to come in, regularly, or as your schedule permits.
There is no school this Wednesday.
We will have the Math test for the End of Module 1 on Tuesday, September 25. There will not be a practice test this time, but we will spend time reviewing prior to the test.
Week of September 11, 2018
Tuesday, September 11 is Patriot's Day. Students should wear red, white, and blue.
Computer Lab news: We are starting the year off with our STEM rotation. Students will be building a Piper computer with a partner for the next 10 weeks. This is such an exciting opportunity and I'm beyond thrilled that we can offer this opportunity to our students.
Science: This week, we begin science rotations. Room 28 students will be starting their rotation off with Mrs. Hassig in Room 17, and focusing on Life Science with some Physical Science. Typically, we will rotate for science on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons.
Week of September 4, 2018
Thursday students will take the Mid-Module assessment for Module 1 of Math. We will use a practice test on Wednesday to familiarize the students with the types of questions and expectations of the assessment. This practice test will come home for review Wednesday night.

Week of August 27, 2018
Monday, August 27 marks a day of change for Welby. It is the first day that we implement our secure campus plan. I'm sure by now you've mapped out your pick-up plan with your child. Don't forget that traffic will be particularly heavy right before and right after school, so plan accordingly.
Tuesday, August 28 is Back to School Night. We will be meeting in Room 28 from 5:30-6:30. I look forward to seeing you all there.
There is no school this Friday or Monday in observance of California Admissions Day and Labor Day.
Week of August 20, 2018
Wow! What a great first week! I am so proud of my students and the way they have adjusted to life in the upper grades. Going from 24 students to 34 students in a classroom can be a challenge, but these kids are making such a smooth transition; they are absolute champs!
So far, we've been spending time getting to know one another through ice breaker activities, as well as learning the procedures of Room 28. We've completed our first STEM challenge, which was a BLAST, and we've even started our language arts and math programs! This week, we look forward to using our Chrome Books for the first time.
Homework assignments will begin Monday, August 20. Students will complete one Zearn lesson at home. As was the case for many students last year, the Zearn lesson will be in preparation for the next day's lesson at school. With each new module, students will be given a packet with Zearn notes which should be used with the lessons requiring notes. Usernames and passwords will be different than the ones used last year. Students will be coming home with that information. If there are any problems, please contact me either through Remind (directions for signing up are below), or through email (link at the top of the page).
I want to thank all of the parents for being so prompt in returning the paperwork that's come home. I know that there has been quite a bit and I appreciate your patience in having to repeat this process every year. Thank you to those of you who have already signed up for Remind. If you have not signed up yet, I strongly recommend that you do. It is such a quick and easy way for us to keep in touch.
Again, we are off to a great start and I couldn't be more excited about this year!
Week of August 14, 2018
Welcome to the Room 28 Website! Our website is full of important and useful information that will help make your year in 4th grade a success. Be sure to check in each week to find out what's new in Room 28. Our class blog is a great way for me to keep parents and students informed about the big events both at our school and in our classroom. You can even find nightly homework assignments here.
A Welcome Packet will come home on the first day of school. Please sign and return necessary forms by Friday, August 24. `
In addition, I would love for all Room 28 families to join "Remind," a handy app where you can receive the most important info coming from our classroom. When you sign up, include "Child's Name/Relationship." For example, my mom would sign up as "Jennifer's Mom." This makes my searches so much easier and helps me know who I'm communicating with, especially at the beginning of the year. You can find the link to Remind at the bottom of this post.
Our Back to School Night is coming up quickly! I hope to see you all in Room 28 on Tuesday, August 28, from 5:30-6:30.
I really look forward to our year together. This is going to be a fabulous year!
