What Is MetaMask Wallet

MetaMask is a self-custodial cryptocurrency wallet and Web3 access tool available as a browser extension, mobile application and web experience. It allows users to create blockchain accounts, receive and send digital assets, manage tokens and NFTs, connect to decentralized applications and authorize blockchain transactions.

MetaMask is a self-custodial wallet. This means the user controls the wallet credentials and is responsible for safeguarding them. MetaMask cannot reset a lost Secret Recovery Phrase, reverse a confirmed blockchain transaction or retrieve assets transferred to an incorrect address.

How MetaMask Works

Cryptocurrency is not stored inside the MetaMask application in the same way that files are stored on a computer. Digital assets remain recorded on their respective blockchains.

MetaMask manages the private credentials used to access blockchain accounts and authorize transactions. The application communicates with blockchain networks through infrastructure providers or configured RPC endpoints and presents the resulting information through its interface.

When a traditional MetaMask wallet is created, the application generates a Secret Recovery Phrase. This phrase can derive multiple accounts and their corresponding private keys.

MetaMask also provides selected onboarding methods involving Google or Apple accounts. These methods still have an associated recovery architecture, but their setup and restoration process differs from the traditional phrase-first flow. Users should understand the selected recovery method before depositing valuable assets.

A local MetaMask password encrypts and unlocks the wallet on a particular device. It does not replace the Secret Recovery Phrase and does not prevent someone who knows the phrase from restoring the wallet elsewhere.

MetaMask Browser Extension

The MetaMask browser extension provides a connection between websites and supported blockchain accounts.

When a decentralized application requests access, the extension displays a connection window. After the connection is approved, the website can see the selected public account and request signatures or transactions.

Connecting a wallet is not automatically the same as sending cryptocurrency. However, a connected application can subsequently request approvals that affect tokens or accounts. Every request must be reviewed independently.

Using an integrated browser can avoid some of the connection problems that occur when attempting to connect a mobile wallet from an unrelated browser application.

MetaMask and Ethereum

MetaMask remains closely associated with Ethereum.

Ethereum transactions require a network fee known as gas. The fee is determined by network conditions and transaction complexity rather than by the value being transferred.

MetaMask and EVM Networks

MetaMask can work with many networks compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine.

Common examples include Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, BNB Smart Chain, Avalanche, Linea and additional EVM chains.

Some networks are preconfigured or available through the wallet’s network menu. Other compatible networks can be added using verified RPC information.

MetaMask and Bitcoin

Current MetaMask documentation describes integrated Bitcoin functionality on Extension and Mobile.

A Bitcoin address is automatically available for compatible accounts. Bitcoin addresses and transactions remain separate from Ethereum and EVM activity.

Users should verify the network and complete receiving address before withdrawing BTC from an exchange. Wrapped Bitcoin on an EVM network is not the same asset as native BTC on the Bitcoin blockchain.

MetaMask and Solana

MetaMask now supports Solana account functionality for managing SOL and SPL tokens alongside compatible EVM assets.

Solana uses a different address system from Ethereum. A Solana receiving address must be selected when receiving native SOL or SPL tokens.

Users should never send native Solana assets to an Ethereum-style address merely because both addresses appear in the same wallet interface.

MetaMask and NFTs

MetaMask can display and manage compatible NFTs in Extension and Mobile.

MetaMask includes security alerts and transaction information designed to help users recognize suspicious activity.

Is MetaMask free to download

MetaMask can be downloaded and installed without paying an application purchase price.

Creating a standard wallet is also free. However, blockchain transactions normally require network fees, and integrated swaps, bridges, card purchases or other third-party services may include additional charges.

Every fee should be reviewed before the transaction is approved.

Is MetaMask a self-custodial wallet

Yes. MetaMask is a self-custodial wallet.

The wallet owner controls the credentials associated with the blockchain accounts. MetaMask cannot access or transfer the user’s assets without a valid signed transaction.

Self-custody also means that MetaMask cannot recover a lost Secret Recovery Phrase or reverse an accidental transfer.

Is MetaMask a hot wallet

Does MetaMask support Bitcoin

Yes. MetaMask’s current Extension and Mobile documentation describes native Bitcoin account functionality.

A Bitcoin address can be accessed through the wallet’s address selector. Native BTC must be sent to the correct Bitcoin address.

Wrapped Bitcoin on Ethereum, Base or another EVM network is a separate token and should not be confused with native BTC.

Does MetaMask support Solana

Yes. MetaMask currently supports management of SOL and SPL tokens.

What is a Secret Recovery Phrase

A Secret Recovery Phrase is a master wallet credential used to derive compatible accounts and private keys.

Anyone who obtains the phrase can usually restore the wallet on another device and transfer the assets.

The phrase must never be entered into an ordinary website, shared with support or stored in an exposed digital location.

Can MetaMask recover a lost recovery phrase

No. MetaMask cannot recover or reset a Secret Recovery Phrase that it does not possess.

If MetaMask remains accessible on another device, the user should follow official backup instructions before losing access to that device.

People offering phrase recovery or wallet synchronization are frequently scammers.

What happens if the recovery phrase is stolen

Every account derived from that phrase should be considered compromised.

Changing the MetaMask password is not enough because the attacker can restore the phrase elsewhere.

The safer response is to create a new wallet with new credentials and transfer legitimate remaining assets from the compromised wallet when it is safe to do so.

Is a MetaMask password the same as a recovery phrase

No.

The MetaMask password protects the local wallet installation on a particular device. The Secret Recovery Phrase can restore the wallet and its derived accounts on another compatible installation.

Forgetting the password may be manageable if the recovery phrase is available. Losing the recovery phrase can lead to permanent loss of access.

Can MetaMask Support ask for the recovery phrase

No. Legitimate MetaMask Support will never request a Secret Recovery Phrase or private key.

MetaMask states that support will not contact users first through unsolicited direct messages or emails. MetaMask does not provide telephone support.

Anyone claiming that a phrase is required for verification, synchronization or recovery is attempting to steal the wallet.

Can MetaMask reverse a blockchain transaction

No. MetaMask cannot reverse a confirmed transaction.

A pending EVM transaction may sometimes be accelerated or replaced, but success depends on network conditions and transaction state.

A transfer confirmed to the wrong address is generally irreversible.

Can the same MetaMask wallet be used on a phone and computer

Yes. A compatible wallet can be restored on Extension and Mobile using the appropriate recovery method.

Restoring the wallet on another device does not move the assets. It gives the additional device access to the same blockchain accounts.

Every added device increases the potential attack surface and should be secured independently.

Does importing MetaMask move cryptocurrency

No. Importing a recovery phrase or private key does not produce an on-chain transfer.

Why is a token not visible in MetaMask

The token may exist on another network, belong to another account or require manual import.

The transfer should be checked through a reputable blockchain explorer using the public address and transaction identifier.

Users should verify the token contract before importing it. A fraudulent token can use the same name or symbol as a legitimate asset.

Why is an NFT not visible in MetaMask

Automatic NFT detection may be disabled, the asset may be on another network or MetaMask may not have identified the collectible automatically.

The contract address and token identifier can be verified through a trusted explorer or marketplace.

An unknown NFT should not be imported merely to follow a link attached to it.

Does MetaMask charge gas fees

Blockchain networks charge gas or transaction fees for processing activity.

MetaMask displays the estimated network fee but does not receive the normal validator fee.

Some eligible transactions can include gas in another supported token. Integrated swaps and bridges may also carry MetaMask or third-party service fees.

Can gas be paid with tokens other than ETH
