2025 DASIE Summer Program for STEM and other Science Majors 

Do you know of a student majoring in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, other Engineering majors, Computer Science or Materials Science? The 2025 Data Analytics for Science Immersion Experience (DASIE) Summer Program is now accepting applications, and we want them to be a part of it!

DASIE provides a hands-on, immersive opportunity to explore how data analytics intersects with science. Over the course of the program, students will:

·  Work alongside peers and mentors to solve real-world challenges,

·  Gain technical and analytical skills applicable to your field of study, and

·  Build a network of like-minded scholars and professionals.

Cornell Center for Astrophysics and Planetary Science

 2025 Research Experiences for Undergraduates 

The Cornell Center for Astrophysics and Planetary Science is pleased to announce its 2025 Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program.

Students will work on individual research projects with Cornell faculty and research staff on a wide range of topics in planetary science, solar system exploration, astrobiology, exoplanets, radio, infrared, and submillimeter astronomy, and related theoretical topics as well as astronomical instrumentation. In addition to their research, students will participate in a series of group activities including lectures, roundtables, workshops and one or two field trips. 

For each participant, a stipend of $7,000 will be provided for the ten-week session, plus $1,250 for housing and meals and up to $800 for travel to and from Ithaca. The program will also provide up to $1,000 to travel to present results at a professional meeting, observe or other research-related activities. Tentative program dates, to be confirmed by February 28, 2025, are Monday, June 2, 2025, to Friday, August 8, 2025. In case of conflict with a student’s academic schedules, dates may be adjusted if approved by the student’s mentor.

To be eligible, undergraduate students must be US citizens or permanent residents. Eligible candidates must have completed at least one year of undergraduate academic training by June 2025 and will graduate at or after the end of the 2025 fall semester or quarter at their school. 

Astronomy, astrophysics, planetary science, physics, geophysics, computer science and engineering students are encouraged to apply.

REU projects offer an opportunity to explore the nation's diverse student talent pool and broaden participation in science and engineering. Women, underrepresented minorities, persons with disabilities, veterans and other non-traditional students are encouraged to apply.

CorGGLE (Cornell Geopaths Geoscience Learning Ecosystem)

This is a paid 9-week summer internship at Cornell called CorGGLE (Cornell Geopaths Geoscience Learning Ecosystem). This program is funded by the National Science Foundation GeoPaths program and is hosted by the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Department at Cornell University. 

CorGGLE allows students and recent graduates from non-geoscience fields to explore opportunities for geoscience graduate study, specifically giving them exposure to myriad socially relevant careers in the geosciences.

University of Missouri Summer Internship Opportunity MU-ARTSS 

The University of Missouri has an exciting opportunity for undergraduates interested in summer research experiences. Undergraduate students are invited to apply for an internship with our program: MU Alcohol Research Training Summer School (MU-ARTSS). MU-ARTSS provides an intensive week-long introduction to alcohol research, coupled with an 8-week paid internship ($5,000 stipend plus room and board) for each student to be mentored by alcohol researchers in the Department of Psychological Sciences and Department of Psychiatry. The program aims to increase the pipeline of scientists among minority and nonminority undergraduates who are interested in pursuing careers in alcohol research and is supported by an institutional training grant through the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).

The week-long program of structured learning experiences will be conducted at the University of Missouri in Columbia from May 30-June 5, 2025. At the conclusion of the course, MU-ARTSS students will be placed in internships from June 6-July 25, 2025 in the laboratories of researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Depending upon students' interests, students will be placed in laboratories that focus on one or more of the following areas: (1) human genetics, (2) behavioral pharmacology, (3) psychiatric epidemiology, (4) neuroimaging, and (5) statistical modeling. In these internships, students will work alongside other interns, graduate students, postdocs and faculty members to gain experience in contemporary alcohol research that will provide valuable experiences in preparation for graduate study.

The program seeks applicants who demonstrate a strong interest in science and medicine. Applicants ideally must have completed 2 years of undergraduate work (exceptions may be made), with a B average or better in all coursework. It is desirable for students to have completed at least 2 courses (3 semester credit equivalents) in each of the following areas: a) behavioral or social sciences, b) biological sciences, and c) physical sciences/mathematics. Acceptance into MU-ARTSS will be made on the basis of academic performance, overall breadth and depth of academic coursework to date, and recommendations. Seven students will be selected to participate. Individuals who have earned a baccalaureate degree are not eligible to apply. Application deadline is Feb. 17, 2025.

2025 Fred Hutch Summer Undergraduate Research Program | Catalog of Biomedical Research Internships 

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Fred Hutch) hosts a summer internship that is designed to provide biomedical research experience and mentorship for undergraduate students of rising senior status. We would appreciate your help promoting the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) among students at the University of the Virgin Islands. I have attached an informational flyer that offers an overview of the program and a brief snapshot of important dates below, including how to apply.

About the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)

The SURP is an intensive, 9-week internship designed to provide research experience and mentorship for rising-senior undergraduate students who are interested in biomedical research. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, students will:

• Complete an independent research project;

• Attend weekly research seminars;

• Participate in professional development workshops designed to facilitate the preparation of competitive applications for graduate/medical school; and

• Present their findings at a competitive poster session.

The program will run from Monday, June 16 – Friday, August 15, 2025. An online application for the 2025 SURP is now available on the SURP website.

The application deadline is midnight Pacific Standard Time (PST) on Friday, January 10, 2025. Letters of recommendation for up to two references are due by midnight Pacific Standard Time (PST) on Friday, January 17, 2025.

National Air Grant Fellowship Program 

The Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Samya Rose Stumo National Air Grant Fellowship Program opens December 1 and is accepting applications from graduate students in aerospace-related fields who are interested in learning how aviation legislation and policy are developed.

Students selected for the program will spend a year in either a Congressional office that has jurisdiction over the FAA, or in an office in the executive branch of government. For example, a fellow may serve as an expert liaison and researcher for a Congressional committee or on an aviation and aerospace focused team at another government agency.

The application process runs from December 1, 2024-January 31, 2025. To apply, students must be a U.S. citizen, have an undergraduate degree and be pursuing an M.A. or PhD degree in an aerospace-related field, human factors or one the listed engineering fields. Students must be within a year of completing that degree. Interested candidates must email 9-APL-NAGF@faa.gov the following documentation that demonstrates interest in, and qualifications for, the Fellowship, including:

1. A résumé.

2. Statement by the applicant describing areas of interest in aviation policy and how the Fellowship experience will be important to individual career goals.

3. Letter of nomination from applicant's academic advisor, or other appropriate academic faculty, stating the applicant's suitability for such Congressional or executive branch experience.

What will I do?

EM MSIPP STARS provides support for you to pursue an undergraduate degree and a master’s degree depending upon program continuation, and the Office of Environmental Management (EM) seeks to continue engagement with students upon completion of the program, preferably as EM employees. Internship activities will introduce you to the missions, functions, operations, and culture of EM and the hosting site. You can choose the area you are most interested in for the summer! As part of your application, you will identify your top 3 research areas.

You will gain relevant experience in your field of study or expand your knowledge in areas of interest. Upon graduation, you will have a greater understanding of the EM mission and its science and technology needs and be highly prepared to apply and be selected for employment with EM.

What are the benefits?

• Tuition Allowance: $36,000/academic year (Amount is based on expected average cost. The tuition allowance may be higher based on the student’s actual tuition costs.)

• Stipend: $32,000/academic year

• Education Allowance: $5,000/scholarship year

• Summer Internship: 10-week (onsite) internship

• • Stipend: $750/week

  • Housing Allowance: Up to $700/week based on assigned location (if relocating more than 50 miles from assigned location)

Eligibility

• Be a U.S. citizen at the time of application.

• Be 18 years of age by June 1, 2025.

• Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale.

• Be enrolled as an undergraduate student at an accredited Minority Serving Institution (MSI) during the 2024-2025 academic year. 

• Have completed two years towards an undergraduate degree and graduating no earlier than the end of the Spring 2026 semester/trimester. Students who have completed more than two years towards their undergraduate degree may be considered if they have completed an internship with the Office of Environmental Management since May 2023.

• Pursuing a STEM degree in a discipline that supports the Office of Environmental Management research and operations.

We are asking you to help identify and encourage talented students to apply for the Aspirnaut™ Undergraduate Discovery Science Experience in Renal Biology and Disease at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC), May 26 – August 2, 2025.

Who we are:

Aspirnaut™ is a K-20 STEM pipeline program for diversity. The goal is to increase STEM achievement and increase the numbers and diversity of students entering the STEM workforce. We are dedicated to cultivating a long-term relationship with our participants and supporting them throughout their educational and career pathway. Since 2009, the program has had over 171 undergraduate participants. Over 99% of participants persist in a STEM major throughout college, and 88% pursue advanced STEM degrees or directly enter the STEM workforce after graduation. What our students do:

Participants will work full-time for 10 weeks in a biomedical research experience as a member of a scientific team. Participants conduct their own research project in the assigned lab and engage in activities that develop professional skills and promote self-discovery. A stipend of $650 per week (paid on a monthly basis) is provided, which is intended to cover all intern costs associated with participation in the program, including housing, food, and travel to and from Nashville. All participants will attend the NIDDK/KUH Summer Undergraduate Research Conference at the end of the program (costs are covered). The 2024 conference will be held July 30 to August 1, 2025, location to be determined.

LANTERN Opportunity: Student Internship Communication & Administrative Assistance 

Introduction

The Hollings Preparation Program (HPP) provides 6-week summer internships to college students between their freshman and sophomore years. The purpose of HPP is to develop recruiting pipelines for students from diverse backgrounds and prepare them through mentorship and professional development experiences to be successful applicants to the Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship.

HPP needs you to provide vital communication and administrative support to help prepare for and run the 2024 program year, and prepare for future years!

What you'll do

Communication Tasks:

·         Develop a Program Book, which includes short biographies of students, mentors and guest speakers and associated planned curriculum. Assist students with developing one-page program experience write-ups that describe their time in the internship. Develop a program certification of completion for each student.

·         Lead the creation of an HPP-web page, which will be used to showcase student experiences and help as a recruitment tool in subsequent years.

·         Assist with recruitment tools to reach remote students from diverse backgrounds. Recruitment activities are likely to include networking with NOAA professionals, tribal organizations, universities, and travel to reach local mentors and students who may benefit from this internship.

Program Administration Tasks:

·         Provide program policies and procedures to interns and mentors and serves as a liaison to the Office of Education and Western Region Security Office, for leading security clearance.

·         Email account management, administering a “batch” security clearance, and calendar management for HPP-related activities (e.g., webinar series and training classes), and facilitating reimbursements (e.g., any security clearance fees, etc.) as needed.

·         Create the mentor/student email listserv as student accounts are created. Provide timesheet and Google Drive orientation during the opening webinar.

·         Serve as the main point of contact between students and GMG Management regarding payment, travel, reimbursement or any other program questions/concerns.

Preferred Skills

·         Strong verbal communication skills, particularly with students that are new to the security clearance process and professional world.

·         Trusted Agent status preferred, but not required. Ability to use Kite-Works for secure file sharing security clearance materials.

·         Excellent organizational skills - the ability to prioritize and multitask, while still exhibiting good judgment and poise.

·         Excellent interpersonal skills – ability to build relationships and connect with others at various levels, both internally and externally.

What you'll learn

Accepting this opportunity will allow you to expand on your knowledge and experience working with to implement priorities within NOAA’s Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan. You’ll hone your communication skills, gain experience in web-page design and content creation, and soft-skills working with students and mentors to ensure they have a positive and inclusive experience within the HPP family.

It will also allow you to gain familiarity with the NOAA security clearance process, and information management and program evaluation.

17th CIFAS Field School in Ethnographic Research Methods in New York City

The Comitas Institute for Anthropological Study (CIFAS) is pleased to announce the 17th CIFAS Field School in Ethnographic Research Methods. The course is offered in two versions: one in its face-to-face modality in New York City in July and one online in August and September.  

The Field School aims to offer training in the foundations and practice of ethnographic methods. The faculty works closely with participants to identify the required field methods needed to address their academic or professional needs. The Field School is suitable for graduate and undergraduate students in social sciences and other fields of study that use qualitative approaches (such as education, communication, cultural studies, health, social work, human ecology, development studies, and consumer behavior, among others), applied social scientists, professionals, and researchers who have an interest in learning more about ethnographic methods and their applications.

I'm reaching out as a program manager at the National Renewable Energy Lab on behalf of the Department of Energy (DOE) asking you to distribute information about our competition to your network. The EnergyTech University Prize (EnergyTech UP) offers $450,000 in cash prizes to teams student teams to present ideas for integrating emerging energy technologies into innovative business concepts.

In our program, winners are chosen based on the quality of the plan, not resumes, IP ownership, or prior funding and teams can present plans for technology developed and available for license from national labs or tech developed by their institution. The barrier to entry is low: teams must submit just a 200-word summary of the technology to be leveraged and the business opportunity by February 1, 2024 and then we'll assign teams to a regional Explore event and help them refine their ideas to prepare for a full pitch on February 27, 28, or 29. Our final informational webinar is Tuesday, January 23rd at 4 p.m. ET.

George Washington Summer Program Advancing Research on Cancer (GW SPARC)

The George Washington Summer Program Advancing Research on Cancer (GW SPARC) engages undergraduates who are underrepresented in the sciences in a mentored summer research experience at the GW Cancer Center in Washington DC. Learn more about GW SPARC. 

• Students participate in cutting-edge research, learn contemporary cancer research techniques, examine health disparities and the impact of cancer in different communities, and prepare for research careers.

Accepting applications for MSI summer science communication interns at SE CASC 

We are now accepting applications for our summer science communication internship for undergraduate students enrolled at minority serving institutions.

Science communication interns assist the SE CASC communications team on a wide range of creative science translation projects, including; social media campaigns, news releases, newsletters, and videos. During any given week, interns may be writing a synopsis of a recent research article, designing infographics, or interviewing a scientist in the field about their work to create a video abstract. They will gain CV-building training in design, science writing, WordPress and Adobe Suite, all while building a portfolio of products.

The internship is 10 weeks starting May 20. Interns will be provided a stipend, on-campus housing at NC State, and initial travel costs to/from Raleigh. We have two internship positions available this summer.

BOSTON STARS SUMMER PROGRAM

 The Summer Training as Research Scholars Program (STaRS) focuses on giving underrepresented students an on-site opportunity to explore their interests in a career of research and doctoral studies at the Chobian & Avedisian School of Medicidine. 

Throughout the 10 week program (June 3, 2024 - August 9, 2024), students will be immersed in multidisciplinary research teams in diverse aspects of biomedical research. They will be mentored by faculty and team members from the Graduate Medical Sciences and at the end of the program, students will present their projects at the STaRS symposium. 

The program application for the summer 2024 cycle is now open for any undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing a MD/PhD or a doctoral degree. My name is Ileana Fenwick, I graduated from Hampton University in 2020 and am currently getting my PhD at UNC Chapel Hill in Quantitative Fisheries. I am leading the “Pathways to Open Science” program starting this month. Pathways to Open Science is a remote event series for Black environmental & marine researchers to build community for the future of data science and mindsets for Open Data Science: the tools and practices enabling reproducible, transparent, and inclusive practices for data intensive science. In our inaugural year of the program (2023), the first session had over 80 participants from all over the US and internationally!

Pathways to Open Science starts Thursday, January 25th at 5-6:30 PM EST and continues weekly through February 29th. 3 sessions introduce concepts and 3 are skill-building. We would like to formally invite you to serve as a faculty award recipient for the event series. A $200 honorarium will be granted for your time in contributing to our knowledge-building and successful community engagement efforts.

We are pleased to announce the University of Iowa’s Biochemistry Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (BSURF) program will take place May 20 - July 26, 2024.  We are seeking your help in identifying highly qualified students for our program.

Our program is designed to provide students with:

• Full-time, hands-on research conducted in the laboratory of a faculty member in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

• The opportunity to present findings at the Summer Undergraduate Research Conference.  Students present posters and discuss their research projects with the public.

• Enrichment activities, including weekly seminars and workshops on graduate school and careers in science.

• A $4,250 stipend.

• Lodging in a University housing facility.

Students who are eligible for the BSURF program:

• Have completed at least two years of college in a biological science (or related) major.

2024 Undergraduate Developmental Science Summer Internship at Yale Child Study Center (YCSC)

Internship dates:  June 3 - July 26, 2024

Each year, the Yale Child Study Center (YCSC) offers an 8-week summer internship for rising junior and senior undergraduate students, spanning all areas of developmental science including clinical and typical development, and basic and applied research. Interns are paired with a faculty mentor, based on their research interests and career trajectories, and spend the summer working with their mentor on a relevant research project. The projects are in a series of tracks that include neuroscience, developmental, and clinical areas. Internships are 40 hours/week, and in addition to research interns are required to attend lectures and seminars where they are exposed to other areas of developmental science beyond the scope of their lab.

At the end of the summer, interns present their research project as a conference poster to YCSC faculty, staff, and students. Past research areas have included the neuroscience of parenting, adolescent risk-taking, interventions for vulnerable families, addiction, and social-emotional learning. The career pathways for our interns are generally to master’s and PhD programs, medical school, or research employment across the U.S. Many interns have their summer mentors provide letters of recommendation for their next career steps.

Materials accepted between December 1, 2023, and January 31, 2024.

This is a competitive internship with a limited number of places. Interns are encouraged to seek funding for this summer internship opportunity from their home institution or other sources. Stipends of up to $4,000 for the 8-week session may be available for those who are unable to secure such funding from their home university. Advice on summer housing will be provided upon acceptance to the internship. Only undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens, or international students currently enrolled in U.S. undergraduate degree granting institutions, are eligible to apply. We are sorry that we are unable to offer this opportunity to high school students or to graduating seniors.

UChicago Data Science Institute Summer Lab: Applications Open

Applications for the 2024 University of Chicago Data Science University Summer Lab are now open. In this paid summer research program, high school and undergraduate students are paired with faculty mentors to conduct research in basic and applied data science. 

Through this pairing, students engage with and hone their skills in research methodologies, practices, and teamwork. We encourage participation from a broad range of students, and require no prior research experience to apply.

The Interdisciplinary REU Program in the Structure and Function of Proteins at the University of Michigan provides undergraduate students with a 10-week summer research experience in the areas of biochemistry, biophysics, cheminformatics, chemistry, computational chemistry, enzymology, molecular biology, and plant biology.  Faculty members in this program represent eight departments at the University of Michigan.  The majority of the research projects featured involve studies of protein structure and function. 

Preference will be given to students with a sincere interest in the pursuit of a graduate degree (PhD or MS) in a STEM (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) discipline.  Students from institutions with limited resources for research and students from underrepresented backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Department of Defense (DoD) Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority Serving Institutions (HBCU/MI) Summer Research Internship Program

DOD HBCU/MI Summer Research Internship Program participants are afforded the opportunity to perform advanced research that contributes to the world around them. This program provides experiences to explore the talents and interests of future scientists and engineers. It aims to increase the number of minority scientists and engineers working throughout the DoD.

Benefits include:

• Bi-weekly stipend of $1200 per week

• Travel and housing included

• Gain valuable confidence and work experience

• Learn in state-of-the-art research facilities

• Work side by side with DoD scientists and engineers
