About the Urban Iditarod

Inspired by alumnus Matthew Failor ’00 and his participation in the legendary Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, St. Peter’s School carries on a unique tradition each year with our very own Urban Iditarod. In this exciting event, students transform into a “dog team,” pulling a shopping cart led by a musher around campus to collect non-perishable food items for the H.O.P.E. Food Pantry. In the weeks leading up to the April 14 race, the teams also compete in events such as trivia, dodgeball, and a talent show. More than just a fun race, this event fosters school spirit, teamwork, and service, as students also raise funds to support Catholic Charities. Through this annual tradition, we honor Matthew’s adventurous spirit while embracing our mission to serve others in need.

Funds raised help sustain initiatives such as financial assistance for rent and utilities, the HOPE Food Pantry, and individuals and families in crisis. Catholic Charities also offers case management, senior support, and disaster relief, ensuring that those facing hardships receive the care and resources they need. Rooted in the values of compassion and dignity, Catholic Charities continues to be a vital source of hope and stability for those in need throughout Richland County.

How You Can Help:
Each team is looking for a sponsor to help them reach their fundraising goal. A $200 (or more) sponsorship goes directly to Catholic Charities, supporting their vital work in Richland County.

Donate Pantry items
Our elementary school will be collecting and organizing pantry items to support the H.O.P.E. Pantry at Catholic Charities. Donations of any of the following items can be sent to the school offices or placed in the collection boxes located in the church vestibule.
Boxed Items: spaghetti, macaroni, Hamburger Helper, cereal
Popular Food Items: peanut butter, jelly, spaghetti sauce
Baby Items: diapers (all sizes), formula, baby wipes, baby food
Personal Care Items: shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, bath soap
Cleaning Products: laundry detergent, dish soap, toilet paper, tissues
