Situation (S):

When I first started at the River Transport Vocational School in Kyiv, we faced several challenges:

1. Diverse Student Backgrounds: We had two groups of students with varying levels of academic preparation, ranging from post-8th grade to post-high school/university. The high school/university graduates, while having a stronger foundation, still required reinforcement of secondary school grammar concepts to refresh their knowledge and improve their skills.

2. Outdated Curriculum: The primary learning material was a scanned copy of a university-level engineering textbook, which was both outdated and inaccessible for many students.

3. Disruptive External Factors: Frequent air alerts and the need for distance learning due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine significantly impacted the traditional classroom setup.

4. Limited Resources: The Vocational School website (link provided) indicated a focus on traditional methods, and resources for implementing modern, technology-based teaching were likely scarce.

5. Misaligned English Language Courses: The General English Standard course was unrelated to the motormen's job and the Professional English course because it focused on broad language skills rather than industry-specific terminology, communication scenarios, or technical vocabulary directly applicable to maritime and engineering tasks.

Task (T):

To address these challenges, I aimed to:

1. Enhance Student Engagement: Develop a more interactive and engaging learning experience for all students, regardless of their background.

2. Modernize the Curriculum: Update the curriculum to align with current industry standards and incorporate modern teaching methodologies.

3. Facilitate Remote Learning: Create a robust online platform that would enable effective learning, even during periods of distance education.

4. Tailor English Language Training: Develop a specialized English language curriculum that focuses on the specific needs of motormen, including maritime terminology, technical communication, and safety protocols.

5. Provide Targeted Support for High School/University Graduates: Offer additional materials and exercises to reinforce secondary school grammar concepts and help these students build upon their existing knowledge.

Action (A):

To achieve these goals, I took the following steps:

1. Leveraged AI for Personalized Learning:

   1. Utilized GPT-4 to generate tailored lesson plans, quizzes, and interactive exercises.

   2. Created engaging audio content using DupDub voiceover to support auditory learners and improve language comprehension.

   3. Developed online games and simulations to reinforce learning and make the subject matter more enjoyable.

2. Built a Comprehensive Online Platform:

   1. Designed a user-friendly platform that combined video lectures, interactive exercises, and discussion forums.

   2. Integrated tools for real-time communication and collaboration between students and instructors.

   3. Provided accessible resources, including transcripts and downloadable materials, to cater to diverse learning styles.

3. Adapted to Distance Learning:

   1. Developed strategies for remote delivery, including asynchronous and synchronous learning modalities.

   2. Provided technical support and guidance to students and faculty to ensure a smooth transition to online learning.

   3. Utilized virtual labs and simulations to replicate hands-on experiences.

Result (R):

The implementation of these strategies yielded significant positive outcomes:

1. Increased Student Engagement: The interactive nature of the digital tools and personalized learning experiences motivated students to actively participate.

2. Improved Learning Outcomes: Students demonstrated improved understanding of the subject matter and enhanced problem-solving skills.
