As an enthusiastic and committed person who is deeply committed to improving the lives of others and working with children, I am thrilled to be pursuing a profession as a Speech and Language Therapist. I believe I am an empathetic, patient individual that has a set of diverse skills that fit extremely well when working with children. The skills I hold include: clear communication skills, creativity skills, organisation skills and collaboration skills. These skills, combined with a genuine love for working with children and an understanding of child development contribute to creating a positive and enriching environment for children's growth and development.
A combination of my volunteering, personal, and academic experiences have influenced my path towards the field of Child Speech and Language Therapy and have highlighted to me the critical role that communication has in children’s overall health. Starting with my volunteering and work experience, I have volunteered and completed placements within two different child based settings. One being a primary school and the next being within the NHS Speech and Language department. Within both placements, I had the opportunity to work directly with individuals facing communication challenges and found this extremely beneficial. Within the NHS, West Sussex Speech and Language department especially, I developed a solid foundation in the theoretical underpinnings of speech and language development. This academic knowledge was complemented by observing the different methods used by the therapists to not only help the children to overcome their difficulties communicating but also to ensure they feel comfortable and safe within the setting and when working with the therapist. I saw the obstacles that children who struggle with speech and language encounter on a daily basis which was extremely eye-opening and created a great foundation for me to build upon my knowledge. My understanding of the critical role Speech and Language Therapists play in assisting children in overcoming these challenges has increased as a result of this experience. Within Colgate Primary school, I experienced different ways of working with children and engaged with a diverse range of students which is beneficial for my future employment as it has broadened my scope of empathy, active listening and awareness as I have had first-hand experience of working with various levels of abilities and personalities.
To improve my employability I have sought out speciality training opportunities. I have recently taken part in a “Autism Awareness” training session, run by the NHS and also enrolled in a British Sign Language course within the University. The “Autism Awareness” training session was run by two Social Communication Therapists who work closely with children who have complex needs. This training was of immense value to my employability as it not only provided me with great knowledge surrounding what autism is, how people can support children with autism and support the pathway for families, it also taught me what the signs of autism are and how the diagnosis procedure works by using a DSM-5 or an ICD-10. British Sign Language is the primary language used by the Deaf community within the United Kingdom. I made the choice to study British Sign Language as it provides me with the opportunity to communicate more effectively with Deaf people, promote inclusivity and breaks down communication barriers. It also enhances my personal enrichment by providing me with a unique skill and a deeper understanding of language diversity. This therefore improves my employability, especially within the Speech and Language sector, as it equips me with the essential skills needed to provide inclusive and comprehensive care and services, whilst being able to communicate effectively with deaf, hard of hearing and non-verbal children. It has broadened my skill set and has provided me with the opportunity to contribute to create a more accessible and welcoming workplace which I believe many employers would find desirable.
I believe that I possess a diverse set of skills that are vital to the success of the role of a Speech and Language Therapist. These skills include, for instance, the ability to work well with others, flexibility, proficiency in microsoft suite (which includes but is not limited to- Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams and Outlook), active listening skills, excellent verbal communication, the knowledge of Psychology and sensitivity, understanding and a non-judgmental approach towards people and their different circumstances.
In conclusion, I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to embark on a fulfilling career as a Speech and Language Therapist. My experiences, academic background, interest and commitment to working with children and improving communication outcomes, hopefully position me as a dedicated and capable candidate ready to contribute to the success of your team.
