OAA PAREnt Leads in stem at marshall space flight center
Every day, Tawnya Plummer Laughinghouse helps the team at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center push the boundaries in space.
She started working at MSFC full-time 19 years ago — now she manages the Technology Demonstration Mission Program, which is the largest part of the agency’s Space Technology Mission Directorate.
However, that wasn’t always the plan for Mrs. Laughinghouse — she once dreamed of being a doctor.
“It wasn’t until, I think the end of my high school year that I discovered NASA and the SHARP program,” Laughinghouse said. “We took data, we presented that data at the end of the six-week program, and so it was an amazing experience in that I saw and worked with engineers that looked like me.”
According to the Pew Research Center, Black and Hispanic adults are less likely to earn degrees in STEM than other fields. They also make up a lower share of STEM graduates by comparison.
Laughinghouse says a NASA apprenticeship throughout her years in college showed her what was possible — and helped her aim for the stars through the NASA Women in Science and Engineering Scholarship Program.
“It was a five-year dual degree program where you go to Spelman, pursue a natural science or math [and] computer science-type degree and you got to an approved engineering school, and do the final two years of an engineering degree,” she explained. “That just appealed to me so much.”
With bachelor degrees in chemistry and chemical engineering, Laughinghouse is leading the way in the Technology Demonstration Mission Program.
Most recently, she played a pivotal role in NASA’s low-Earth orbit flight test of an inflatable decelerator that launched in November 2022. That inflatable heat shield will be a crucial part in safely and successfully landing the first people on Mars.

STEM Success Academy
Oakwood Adventist Academy is partnering with Oakwood University’s Department of Biological Sciences to provide additional math and science support for our middle and high school students. This is an awesome opportunity where students will receive tutoring, from top scholars of the University, on topics covered in math and science classes. The academy began Sunday, February 5, 2023 with a Parent and Student Orientation and will run for 10 weeks until April 16, 2023. There are two modalities for these sessions:
In-Person Sessions: Sundays, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Location: Cooper Complex 1 Department of Biological Sciences.
30-Minutes Virtual Sessions: Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
We’re exited about this opportunity to partner with Dr. Vanterpool and her team on behalf our OAA students. Please contact Mrs. Henry (thenrry@myoaa.org ), Ms. C. Garnett (cgarnett@myoaa.org ) or Mrs. L. Garnett (lgarnett@oaa.org ) for more information.

AHSAA 1a State Championship Games Bound
Last year our Oakwood Mustangs were denied the opportunity to play in the championship games. This was due to the denial of our request for a time change as we were not going to play during Sabbath hours. We won our case, the AHSAA rules and regulations were modified to ensure that the same thing we endured last year wouldn't happen again.
Our boys varsity team put in the work this season as they held the spot as #1 for our area while simultaneously playing against a system. On Tuesday, February 14, 2023 our OAA Mustangs earned a redemptive win against Spring Garden High School in Piedmont, AL.
Due to that win, not only have our guys earned the opportunity to play at the state championship games, they also have the chance to become state champions!
Please continue to keep them in your prayers and show your support in whatever way you can as they prepare to head to Jacksonville State University on Monday, February 20, 2023 to play at 7:30pm against Faith Christian.

International Cultural Week In ACtion
We celebrated international week by selecting a country that each class would research, do presentations and display both in and outside of their classrooms.
The goal of the international cultural week is to promote cultural diversity by showcasing different types of cultural expression. This lends to the encouragement of inclusive, equitable and vibrant participation by our students when it comes to the arts, culture and heritage sectors. We want to be sure there is an awareness of different cultures which ultimately lends to an understanding of the importance when it comes to cultural diversity.
We visited Africa, Jamaica, India and China just to name a few. Students had passports and received stamps upon visiting each of the countries represented.
Please enjoy this pictorial tour.

OAA Oratorical contest
It is so important to keep growing, aspiring to do more, enhancing, and developing our school program. One, among many of the goals in the SCC is to have 100% of its schools implementing Oratorical Contests, STEM programs, Spelling Bees, Music Programs, Math Competitions, Flight programs (flight assimilators in the academies), etc. for our students.
We are excited to announce that OAA is one of the SCC schools making that vision a reality! We will host the Be Bold Oratorical Contest on Friday, March 17, 2023.
The contest is for grades 7-12. Please note the requirements and prizes on the flier.
Email oaainfo@myoaa.org with any questions.
update on amazonsmile
In 2013, AmazonSmile launched to make it easier for customers to support their favorite charities. Amazon was very excited about the potential for the program and the impact it could have for many charitable organizations such as OAA. We want to thank you for selecting OAA as your charitable organization over the years.
On January 18, 2023, Amazon announced they have made plans to wind down AmazonSmile by February 20, 2023. Until this date, customer purchases made via AmazonSmile will continue to accrue funds for OAA (if listed as your charity) as normal. Though AmazonSmile will no longer be available, you will still be able to support the OAA product lists as we share them.

SCC covid - 19 update #14
As COVID continues to evolve we want to be sure to keep our OAA Community abreast of the expectations from the South Central Conference pertaining to the guidelines and expectations. You can view the full update here.
CARLINE PROTOCOL
For the safety of you, your child(ren), the OAA volunteers, safety patrols and staff, please be reminded of the following:
GENERAL RULES:
Children should enter and exit the vehicle from the right side only.
Only allow your child to exit your car on the sidewalk.
Drive slowly while on campus, especially during drop-off/pick-up.
All cars move together "One Band, One Sound" [this is for the safety of your child(ren) + all children of Oakwood Adventist Academy]
MORNING SPECIFIC RULES:
Drop-off begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 7:55 a.m. Students may not enter the building until 7:30 a.m. Oakwood Adventist Academy is not responsible for their safety before that time. Please do not leave them unaccompanied outside of the school building.
Safety patrols are here to assist your children out of the car and to class. If you need to speak to a teacher, please schedule a conference.
If you are not at the drop-off zone in front of the school, your children should not exit.
Children should be ready to exit the vehicle when they arrive at the drop-off zone. Please don’t wait to put sneakers on and collect your school supplies when you pull up to the drop-off zone.
Do not begin to pull away from the car line until all children are safely on the other side of the barrier.
If the 8:00 a.m. bell rings, your child is tardy and you MUST sign them in at the front desk.
AFTERNOON SPECIFIC RULES:
K-8 ||| Pick-up begins at 3:15 p.m. and ends at 3:45 p.m., M-TH AND begins at 2:15 p.m. and ends at 2:45 p.m. on Friday
9-12 ||| Pick-up begins at 3:30 p.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m., M-TH AND begins at 2:30 p.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. on Friday
OAA car tags are preferred to be hanging from the rear view mirror. Bare minimum they must be placed on the left hand side of the dashboard.
Students may NOT walk to the parking lot at any time unless accompanied by an OAA staff member.
Please refrain from talking with the teachers during pick-up, as this distracts them from ensuring the safety of all children.
AFTERNOON SPECIFIC PROCESS:
Cars arrive and we group names based on arrival for calling students to line up for dismissal.
Cars make their way to the front of the building (8 cars at a time)
Students are dismissed to their car based on how they were grouped.
Once the sidewalk is clear and all students are loaded, the group at the sidewalk departs so that the next group of 8 cars can arrive to the front of the building.
***Please do NOT drive around pass the old high school building/the Anna Knight building to cut the line. When you cut the line, it prolongs the car line process for everyone as the names and numbers get thrown off.***

MASK Protocol reminder
With Covid, RSV and the Flu still on the rise, all students are still REQUIRED to wear masks while at school. Please take the precautionary measures to ensure all students are safe while at school by providing your child with a mask daily.
Our disposable mask supply is depleted. This is a result of too many students reporting to school without a mask and/or students coming to get a new mask during the day.
Thanks so much!
