The EM-100 Oxylator is designed to be used as an alternative to a BVM. It can be used with a cuffed facemask or endotracheal tube.
BLS procedure with a face mask:
a. Connect the Oxylator directly to the facemask.
b. Assure that the setting of the pressure release is at 25 cm H2O. Always RESET to 25 cm H2O after each use.
c. With the O2 tank FULLY turned on, depress the oxygen release button (gold button marked “O2”), and then turn ¼ turn clockwise to lock. This allows a constant flow of ~ 600 mL of 100% oxygen per second.
d. Place the mask on the patients face. Make sure you have a good seal and an open airway. The Oxylator will ventilate the patient and chest rise & fall will begin to occur. You should adjust the pressure settings upward from 25 cm H2O in increments of 5 cm until the inhalation time is 1½ - 2 seconds.
e. Observe for chest rise & fall and color improvement. If a “stuttering” sound is heard, OR rapid cycling occurs, check for airway blockage or excessive head extension.
ALS procedure with endotracheal tube:
a. Set the pressure to 25 cm H2O to start. If no cycling occurs, increase pressure until cycling occurs. If a “stuttering” sound is heard OR rapid cycling is observed, check for debris or kink in the ET tube.
b. Attach one end of a disposable extension to the Oxylator and the other end to the ET tube.
c. Depress the gold button, and then turn ¼ turn clockwise to lock. The Oxylator will ventilate the patient and chest rise & fall will be beginning to occur. The Oxylator will begin to cycle on & off. You should adjust the pressure setting upwards in 5 cm increments until an inhalation time of 1½ - 2 seconds is achieved in adults OR 1 second in children. Observe for chest rise & fall and color improvement.
d. Secure tube in place.
