Big Thief’s super-songwriters Adrienne Lenker and Buck Meek lure listeners into a soothing daydream with their newest single, “Certainty,” released on September 7th. As a powerful, reigning indie rock band, “Certainty,” lays a foundation for Big Thief’s raw folk and country influences. The earthy tones seamlessly pair with their 2019 album release, “Two Hands.”
In “Certainty,” Lenker and Meek warble the chorus, “My certainty is wild, weaving, for you, I am a child, believing,” and take their audience on a journey to a warm campfire, singing along and tapping feet. While the bright acoustic guitar sounds promote a sense of nostalgia, James Krivchenia’s shuffling drums and Hannah Cohen’s harmonizing vocals tempt the listener into fantasizing about the time to come. This couples well with the chorus’s last lines, “You lay beside me sleeping on a plane, in the future.”
Big Thief’s newest track is refreshing because it tells the well-known story of certain love and romantic highs while being able to contrast it with grounding and homely instrumentals. It is favorably reminiscent of country-folk hero John Prine, as well as contemporary artist Kevin Morby, who is well-liked for his Dylan-esque lyrics and vocals.
Playing at Higher Ground in Burlington on September 28th, Big Thief invites long-time followers to engage in their foundations, while wooing new listeners into the band’s comforting yet reviving threshold.
