On Saturday, March 6, The Burly Beaver social media director Mila Alicea (‘24) hosted an Instagram live roundtable talking about the experiences of Latinx-identifying students on Champlain’s campus. She was joined by Silvanna Najri Saladin (‘21), Joshua Leon Mejia (‘24), and our production manager Minerva Paulino (‘24).
Alicea asked questions that covered many topics, from the difference between race and ethnicity to the over-sexualization of Latinx individuals, and how these issues affect day-to-day safety and comfort. Also discussed was how Champlain has responded to the reports they filed after experiencing microaggressions on campus.
The event received a great deal of attention, not only from the students and audience of The Burly Beaver but from the administration of Champlain College. Alicea was told the day before she couldn’t hold this event because of “logistical” issues and later was asked to meet with the Director of Student Engagement Lisa Mazzariello regarding Alicea’s decision to hold this event despite being told to wait by campus administration.
The events surrounding Loud Latinx received media attention, including an article in the Champlain Crossover, “Minority Student Feel Betrayed by Miscommunication by Bel Kelly, the associate editor. In addition, the editorial “Student Press Freedoms and What Champlain Needs To Change” written by Haley Seymour(‘21), editor and chief of The Crossover, and Cassie Melchior (‘24), the editor and chief of The Burly Beaver, has been posted in response to issues surrounding the event.
